boosted itr smoking
alright guys here we go. i own a 1997 honda intergra type r. the car has a t3/t4 turbo kit installed less than 1000 kilometers ago. the car is starting to smoke. it only smokes when theirs a load on the engine. it doesnt smoke at idle or when i rev it to about 4k while parked. its more noticable when i come to a complete stop at a traffic light then the smoke just bellows out and about 10-15 seconds later stops. i did a compression check today and the numbers were from left to right 252,240,242,248. i am running the stock pcv system and when i took the pcv valve out it was covered in oil. i installed a new one 3 days ago and it shouldnt have that much oil on it. could i need a crankcase breather to eliminate this or could it be something else?
its a blueish white(definaltly smells like burning oil). after driving it for awhile ill park it goto the back of the car and theirs a small amount of oil pooled in the tip of the muffler.
ive been meaning to order a leakdown tester it just takes a really long time to get stuff shipped to an apo address from the states.

Might be valve stem seals, but I'd check all the oil fittings/connections that feed the turbo first to make sure there aren't any leaks there. Also check to see if the oil return line on the turbo is functioning properly.
see i thought it was the turbo too and i replaced it last week with a brand new precision turbo and it still smokes. the return line is good i have about 6 inches of line going to a moroso pan. it has a 90 fitting on the turbo to a barb fitting on the pan with no crazy bends or slopes. i even thought that the fitting on the pan was kinda low so i filled it with a little over 3 quarts till it dripped out the hole and nothing still same old problem. so i pulled the down pipe and charge pipe off today to check for oil and nothing but carbon on the down pipe and the charge pipe is clean.
did i mention that i have blow-by. no smoke or nothing from the valve cover but when i pull off the oil cap its definatly noticable.
also i disco'ed the pcv valve when the car was running and the pcv is working properly but their was no positive or negative air pressure being released from the black box.

i just went through that, its your turbo. if oil is coming out of your exhaust and it smokes white... guess what?? its unburnt oil. when oil passes through the combustion chamber it turns to blue smoke which is typical, white smoke comes from un-combusted oil getting through your exhaust.
what i did was put back the stock headers and piping, injectors and ecu. i turned it on and no more white smoke.
also check your inter cooler, mine ended up with a court of oil. and it dumped some out through the bov as well. if you do have any oil in your pipes, seafoam the engine so it clears out all that gunk that is left behind.

so anyone else have insight to what it could be? i think it is most likely the stock pcv system. would it be worth it to try a crankcase breather for ***** and giggles?
because you havnt vented the block, its caused blowby and now i think your rings are stuffed. similar thing happened to me afew years ago... doing it now i think is to late, white smoke should also come out of your catch can if you have 1..
see i highly doubt its the rings. theirs no smoke comming from the catch can. and its smoked from the first time i started the car with the turbo. ive put less than 1000miles on the car since installing the turbo. and its not like the car smokes that much its only really nocitable when i hit boost otherwise during normal driving its very minimal.
when you pull off the oil cap is their a crap load of blow by gas comming out? cause thats what mines doing and as soon as my crankcase breather set-up arrives from z10 ill let you know if it fixed the problem.
If you have crank case smoke coming out of breathers or oil cap, you probably have a ring that took a dump and now might have a scored up cylinder wall. Check your valve train, then pull the head, it'll save you a lot of testing time to just find the problem....at least in my experience.
start the process, do a compression test, look in the exhaust ports for excessive oil build up. check the catch can. without you doing actual tests this thread is just guessing
did a compression test. compression was good. no oil in the exhaust ports just carbon. catch can has no oil in it. the hoses going to it are oily but nothing in the can. no oil in the charge pipes.
Here what it could be:
White smoke
(which is really steam) happens when coolant is leaking into the combustion chamber. This could be due to a bad head gasket, a raised head, or cracks in the cylinder wall(s). A good indicator is looking for oil in the coolant (eg check inside radiator, radiator cap, or oil cap for white mayonnaise like substance.
Black smoke
is excess fuel or incomplete fuel burning. This can be due to bad ignition components (ie spark plugs, dizzy, cables, etc) causing the fuel not to burn completely. But the biggest cause of this is poor tuning. Make sure that you A/F ratio is good by getting your ECU tuned properly.
Bluish gray smoke
is oil burning in the combustion chamber, or somewhere in the exhaust track. This can be caused by a number of reason (bad turbo seals, bad seals on the engine block, an oil leak, oil leaking into the exhaust track, or bad valve stem seals.
But on a turbo car, the most common reasons are cracked piston rings, cracked piston(s), or bad turbo seals. If its any of these, you shouldn't drive your car or you could do more damage (especially if its bad rings). Have a mechanic look into the spark plug holes to check the condition of the cylinders
BTW, you should really ask the people in the FI forum or do a search there. There are tons of info about this.
