1998 Accord Balance Shaft Belt Tensioner
Hi all! Wow was I happy to find this forum. I really need some expert help here in Venezuela with my '98 Accord.
Its' got the 2.3L 16 valve non VTEC engine and due to some extremely poor workmanship with the cam belt and balance shaft belts my engine has jumped cam timing.
I don't think there's any valve damage because I did a leakdown test and it was around 20%.
At any rate, what my first question here is how the banance shaft belt tensioner is constructed. When I removed mine I found that the tension roller was loose in the mounting arm. It in fact can easily be entirely removed from the mounting arm.
What I'd like someone to confirm is whether this part is in fact defective as I strongly suspect.
Another part of all this is that I don't speak Spanish and don't even know what the tensioner would be called in Spanish. Of course because of this I can't even go to a parts store and know what to ask for.
If anybody out there knows what the part would be called in Spanish I'd really appreciate it if they would mention it in a reply.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone gives.

damn that sucks. okay how about a part number? will that help? my translator is busy this second let me see if i can ask her in a minute.....what about a OEM part number? and what you doing there anyway?
Yeah, you bet, a part number will really help a lot! I do speak enough Spanish to say a part number.
I am here because the cost of living is really low and I'm retired and on SS. Most things here are really inexpensive here compared to the USA. Cars and car parts though are really expensive and that's why I'm going ahead so carefully.
Gasoline is only eight cents a gallon; my water bill for two months was only a couple dollars; people are really nice here; there is no personal danger at all.
Thanks a lot for your reply!

Btw, can I assume from the reply with part numbers that it is OK for the tensioner roller to be loose in the tensioner pulley bracket?
Mine is and that's why I believe it to be defective. In fact the roller can easily be removed from the bracket. There's some evidence of mine formerly spot welded together.
It all looked to me as if the balance belt tensioner had twisted a bit sideways and interfered with the cam belt.
Your giving part numbers for both the roller and bracket suggests that it could possibly be OK that the roller can be loose or even removed.
As always, thanks a lot!
