Default a/c troubleshooting

ok so i've been following this from ALLDATA

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5619/40010204.gif
http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/8752/74145735.gif
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/7692/76693386.gif

everything checks out and is making sense till i get to the part at the bottom of page 2. it says "does the fan run and compressor clutch engage?" at this point (after running the jumper wire) my condenser fan does kick on, but the compressor clutch does nothing. there's no provision for that, so what the hell does it mean?

on the top of page 3 it says to disconnect the 14p connector and test the blu/red wire. problem is, it's an 18 pin connector... ok so i figure well i'll search for the blu/red wire and test if it has power. it's telling me to test the female terminals, none of them show any voltage. so i'm like ok... i'll test the blu/red wire on the male side. it does have power. so, what gives?

i then test for continuity position 6 on the 6p connector and the green wire on the (not 14p) connector. there should be continuity, but there is not.

i lastly test for continuity between the no. 1 terminal of the heater 6p connector and body ground. there isn't any. checked the grounds at g401, g402, and they're fine.

so after all that, i don't know what to think. my buddy said he diagnosed the car back when the old owner had it and said he determined the the a/c diode in the hvac unit had failed. everything with the hvac besides a/c appears to work. heater and the variable speeds work. recirculate works. and if i hit the a/c button the light will come on.

all the wires appears to be in good shape so i doubt, as the continuity test results would suggest, that there is a break in one or more wires. at this point i'm thinking just replace the heater control panel, but i don't want to waste the money and effort if the problem is elsewhere.

thoughts?

this may be an elementary question but are you sure you have freon in the system?

at this point there is no refrigerant in it. when my friend determined it wasn't working before, and told the guy what it needed, he for the timing being evacuated the system and recovered the r134a.

now that you bring that up it's apparent why the compressor didn't kick on. the a/c pressure switch detecting no refrigerant and no pressure did not allow the compressor to kick on. so that most likely explains that.

still doesnt explain the other issues i'm having though :/

1) You should not be following a troubleshooting diagram for an A/C problem where neither the fan nor compressor work when your fan clearly does.

2) You would instead follow the other troubleshooting diagram where only the compressor clutch does not engage. HOWEVER, you already know why the compressor does not engage --- there's NO refrigerant in the system!

In summary, do not follow ANY troubleshooting diagrams until you evacuate the system, replace the receiver/dryer, and recharge the system. You may find that the A/C system works fine at this point. If not, THEN troubleshoot based on the problem.

even back when the proper amount of r134a was in the lines the fan nor compressor ran. that's why i followed the diagram for both. the only time the fan came on was in the middle of troubleshooting it. if the fan worked to begin with i would have followed the other diagram. i do see how trying to do this without the system being charged could cause problems. so i will have my buddy plug his fancy big machine into it, refill it, and then go from there.

replaced the control panel and now the condenser fan comes on when i hit the a/c button. i also have positive voltage at one side of the pressure switch. charged the a/c system today and it's working great.
