2004 Accord wiper problem. Is this normal?
I have a 2004 Honda Accord that has 50K miles on it that I purchased from a Toyota dealer last year. I bought and extended warranty through them, so I can only go to them. I brought it in to the dealer last week for a wiper/brake problem. When I have my wipers turned to the "on" position and am going approximately 5mph my wipers will go off everytime the brake is applied. At first they say it's a junction box problem and not covered under the warranty. Then when the GM was going to take care of it anyway now they tell me it's normal. The dealer says they contacted Honda Motors and there dealer. I called Honda and they said it seems like an electrical problem and that it's NOT normal. Does anyone have any idea? Im so sick of getting the run around.
OMG, that is NOT NORMAL..I also have a 2004 Accord sedan EX-L 4-cylinder with 120,000 miles and I have NEVER heard and/or personally experienced such a thing. They are totally screwing with you. Do you have to have it serviced at the Toyota dealership under your warranty? You might want to call American Honda Corporation (USA) at: 1-800-999-1009 - Business hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pacific Time.
They will get to the bottom of the problem and they might even tell you to bring it to a Honda dealership to get it serviced at "no charge". They are a fantastic service corporation.
Shorty story...My first new car was a 1991 Honda Accord LX sedan 4-cylinder. At 6 years and around 82,000 miles (well beyond my warranty original 3/36,000) my transmission blew. I called American Honda Corporation (USA) and they actually replaced the transmission "FOR FREE" - at no cost to me whats-so-ever. WOW...A true story. I have been with Honda ever since. I dare anyone to top that story with any other car maker...

You think that's bad. My wife's 2005 does this occasionally. When she has the wipers on intermittent, and she presses the gas they go faster all the way to full wiper, but as she back off off the gas they go slower then go back to intermittent when she comes to a stop. She has walked out to the garage to go to work and the car is sitting there with all the lights on, but the switch is in the OFF position.
Wow...I talked to the dealership again and they're sending me to a Honda dealer. I guess the techs are as clueless as Toyota is with all their recalls. Im going to try that American Honda Corp. number and let you know what they say. Thanks for all your comments!
well heres the thing....why would a toyota tech waste their time diagnosing a honda when they don't have access to IN or the service manual, not all shops have all data (which is a piece of **** for wiring diagrams) and if its a multiplex or CAN issue do you really blame them for not ****ing with it?
There are very few people who will fix any make of car at a dealer since they don't turn wrenches on them daily and thats why they don't work at an independent shop they don't want to work on everything.
one check you can do yourself is check your brake light bulbs and make sure the dual filiment bulbs are ok and didn't drop onto the other and is back feeding the circut i have seen this beat the hell out of many many good tech's for days on end and it ends up just being a brake light bulb

Per the Accord owners manual:
INT - The length of the wiper
interval is varied automatically
according to the vehicle’s speed.
Vary the delay by turning the INT
TIME ring. If you turn it to the
shortest delay, the wipers will
change to low speed operation when
the vehicle speed exceeds 12 mph
(20 km/h).
In addition to what they said, the wipers are also linked to the brake pedal. So when you are at a stop, and take your foot off the brake, the wipers will give a saftey wipe immediately to be sure your view of the road ahead is clear. IT's perfectly normal operation of the wipers.

And to the guy commenting on the headlight operation (also covered in the owners manual) this is totally normal as well. The feature is nice when you park on a dark street and would like the area around the car to be illuminated when you press the unlock button on the remote, plus when you exit the car it gives you some lighting for a bit and also makes it impossible for your wife to kill the battery if she leaves her headlights on. And just a side note, this feature is not on the DX Accord.
If you leave the headlights in the On position the following happens:
This feature turns off the headlights,
parking lights, taillights, and license
plate light within 15 seconds of
removing the key from the ignition
switch and closing the driver’s door.
This feature activates if you leave
the headlight switch in the ‘‘parking light ’’
or ‘‘headlight on’’ position, remove the key,
then open and close the driver’s door.
If you remove the key from the
ignition switch with the headlight
switch on, but do not open the door
and get out, the lights will turn off
after 10 minutes.
The lights will turn on again when
you unlock or open the driver’s door.
If you unlock the door, but do not
open it within 15 seconds, the lights
will go off. With the driver’s door
open, you will hear a lights-on
reminder chime.

I totally agree with brig4. My '03 wiper speed varies with speed. It is normal but only in the lowest INT setting. If your wipers are actually going OFF (more than 15 seconds or so) then you might have a problem.
There is a recall on wiper motors during this era because of water intrusion causing problems. Go to Honda and find out if your car is covered by the recall.
It's a great car. Don't let something small like this change your mind about it.
