Rollcage question
Can someone fill me in on the details of going for a 4pt vs a 6pt, as well as autopower vs kirk? I realize a 6 pt is more extreme, but if my car will eventually be used as a track-only car within a yr or so, should I go for a 6pt initially?
whatever race guidelines you need to follow
if none,
6pt is significantly heavier, and requires hacking of the dash.
4 pt is lighter, easier to install (imho) but provides less safety

4 points are way easier to install (and remove if necessary). Both the Kirk and Autopower 4 point roll bars are fairly heavy but good enough for most purposes.
A 6 point will generally stiffen the chassis much more. Most of the bolt-in 6 pts have the front bars come in front of the dash - which hampers ingress/egress into the driver's seat - especially if you have a racing bucket seat. What kind of cage you get depends on how crazy you want to go (i.e. full race "cage"). I went with a 6 point that punctures the dash around the window vent area to make getting in and out of my track car easier. If you choose to run door bars you will have to lose the skins on the insides of the door. If you want to install foot boxes and such you will likely have to remove the entire interior.
Chromoly cages are lighter but are difficult to weld together properly. Special equipment and a talented welder is required = $$$$$
Plan for some downtime if you go with a 6 point.
Cusco also makes nice bolt in 6 point.

A 6-point does not necessarily require hacking of the dash. Most bolt-in applications do not.
My vote is for a 6-point or 8-point. Go weld-in if you have the dough.

i like monkee barz.......they seem safe with my 1.5" 4 pt harnesses with plastic buckles....(dont worry, i bolt the harness's to the rear seat belt location for safetys sake)

harness? I pretend I`m in a kart and don`t wear them
the best is when i see how many buddies i can fit in the rear area of the cage....then drive around on the wrong side of the road and play chicken with oncoming traffic.
If you're planning on doing SCCA competition, you may want to check last months fast track. The new rule is that cages must have a diagonal cross member, even if it's removable.

Can't you go wth a 4pt now and add the front section at a later date? I'm sure this isn't quite as rigid as a 6pt from the start, but it might be an option.

Find a decent local race shop that does fab work. Have them build a custom cage to your specs.
King Motorsports will do a complete custom 8 point cage with NASCAR door bars for around $2000.
It's your ***... do it once and do it right.

Thanks for all the responses. At the moment, I think I'm leaning towards to the 4pt. Does it really matter to go with autopower vs Kirk? What are the differences between the 2?
