Default D15B7: Smog Test Fail: EGR Functional?

1993 Honda Civic Ex.

Has a 1993 dx engine on a 1993 ex civic. So instead of a d16z6 it has a d15b7.

My friend failed the smog test on the egr functional. It says "n/a"..
How will you fix this situation if you wanted to pass.

Does the egr valve need to be replaced?

.

Your b7 should not have an egr valve. Most d-series motors do not. The only ones I know of that do are the z1 and y5 from the vx an hx.

I thought N/A means that vehicle doesn't have that piece of equipment.

I too am having problems passing inspection.
I have a D15b7 engine with no EGR valve.
My inspector said I should replace it, and when I went to purchase the part I was told the car was never equipped with one.

I called Meineke up and argued with a gentleman over the phone who says he builds Honda "hotrods" for a living - the fact he even used "hotrod" turned me off, but he began to argue with me that all honda motors have an EGR valve, and that the only way it wouldn't is if it was imported from Japan.

I told him mine was a JHM - he corrected me saying JDM - (I was speaking VIN, which he apparently doesn't understand)

He said I had to replace my intake manifold with an american one - which I completely disagree with. Granted my car is only an S model Del Sol - but I love the damn thing and I'm don't think he's right.

My car passed inspection last year without an EGR valve, so now I'm scouring the net for what I can do. The only thing failing is Nox by about 100 PPM over what the max PPM.

* I've used a bottle of RXP
* Replaced the air filter
* Replaced Spark Plugs and Wires with NGK IX plugs and HE71 Wires
* Attempted to replace the MAP sensor - which only caused my car not to run, so I put the old one back in and it runs fine with it.

I'm so close to replacing the converter - but with all my other emissions being acceptable, I don't think that's the problem.

You think it could be the IACV? It does have 216k miles on the car.
Not sure if it could increase Nox tho.

EDIT: I need to know if there are any vacuum hoses I should check that could be causing this - My car was stolen and stripped 2 years ago, and last year I got it in running condition, but I had taken it into a shop to have some work done on it and noticed the fumes were a little stronger afterwards. Is it possible that they are stronger because a hose or something is disconnected that possibly helps?

I need more INFO!

Any feedback is appreciated.

I'd say your mechanic is confusing EGR valve with Evap Purge Solenoid (all USDM civics came with a purge solenoid, JDM versions did not, and you either have to replace the intake manifold with a USDM version, or drill and tap a couple of holes in the JDM intake manifold to add the purge solenoid.) if you do however have a D15B7 its not JDM, and should have the purge solenoid. And again it does not have an EGR valve, nor does it have provisions for mounting one.

I see, I was confused on JDM -etc...
I have a 1995 Honda Del Sol S model with a 16 Valve 1.5 Liter D15B7 engine. But you say it's not JDM

I did manage to find some info stating that any 5 letter engine code means its from a different regional market - like the US. So I'm guessing my car (Chassis) was built in Japan, without an engine or AC - and once it got here the D15B7 and AC was dumped into it.
I did locate the engine Stamp and it does in fact say D15B7.

First three characters in my VIN are JHM - meaning manufactured in Japan. With assembly location character of S - meaning Suzuka, Japan.
It has no EGR valve.
Every part on my car is JDM, down to the lights.Except the engine lol wow...ok
Thank you, I feel more informed now.

So I'm down to Vacuum leak, the Cat, or perhaps some other faulty sensor that I still haven't quite explored it's existence yet.
I'm taking it to a shop in the morning - if they can fix it and it pass inspection - I'll come back and let everyone know what it is.

The engine would have come from japan, and installed there, but it was intended for the US/Canadian market.
