Default EJ2 speedo issues

Yo.. A buddy's got an EJ2 with a D15, his cluster works fine but his speedo doesn't. Noticed there wasn't any speedometer cable on the back of the cluster, so I guess it's electronic. What could be wrong? I'm thinking poorly connected sensor as the speed works from time to time, but we're yet to locate it on the car.. Where is it?

Also, his car is an import from somewhere, I noticed some Honda of America badging in the engine bay.. Does that mean it's built in the USA and could've been sold somewhere else, or is it a US spec car? What are the main differences from euro to US spec?

Thanks for any help

It's a US spec. Could be bad speed sensor, could be a bad speedometer. Speed sensor on trans is 3-wire plug towards the back of the trans (on manual trans).
