Default Gas milage on B16a swap

I've been making alot of posts in this forum but I keep running into problems on my Daliy Driver. I've swapped a JDM B16a into my 93 EG8 and it seems to be getting HORRIBLE gas milage. While I'm going about 50 mph the RPM's are at 3 grand in 5th gear. That seems extremely high, and I'm thinking that this could cause my decrease in MPG and maybe be hard on the motor? If anyone has similar swaps in their car can you guys give me some advice?

get used to small gear ratios. when i do 70(our highway speeds) its at like 4-4200 rpm. just how it is. think that 3 grand and it redlines at 8200. you still have 5k of useable rpm.

get a bigger final drive and it'll be better. i still get about 30 mpg in my del sol b16.

but what do you consider bad mpg?

I would say around 30 mpg is normal for a B16A. With a little bit of hypermiling, my all time best mpg in my B16A hatch was 38 mpg.

There are so many variables when it comes to mpg. With a properly running vehicle, the biggest variable is driving style.

FWIW

I've got a B16A with the Y21 tranny and at highway speeds I'm running around 4k (more like 3850 but who's counting). I drive mine in the city a lot so my MPG sticks around 24-25 and highway about 28. My B16 is in a stripped down 92 Si so that may be why it's a little higher, but I doubt it.

My friends b16a2 gets 25-30, he likes to hit vtec ALOT, so its not uncommon for it to dip lower like 20-25.

As mcvtec said, there are countless things that can affect mpgs in negative and positve ways.

I probably hit vtech 3 times a week at the most. And I usually drive my car like a grandma with a broken foot. I have an after market throttle body, and fuel rail which may cause my gas milage being so low? I just filled up a few minutes ago and I got about 21 MPG..

Maybe a tune?

Put the stock parts back on, There is real no reason to have either unless, your runing some other mods. A stock tb and fuel rail will serve perfectly.

what size TB do you have shade93? a stock b16 TB is great, id say no bigger than a 64-66mm unless you have head work and/or lumpy cams.

There are people out there, like myself, who get great mpg from B16s. Just because you can't break 28 mpg with a CEL doesn't mean all B16s get poor mpg. And people can blame it on the tranny gear ratios all they want.

Like I said, I've gotten 38 mpg before and many many many times in the mid/upper 30s. Member BlackDueceCoupe gets 40+ mpg with his B16A2 in an HX.

FWIW

I have a b16a in my eg, but the tranny has had the gears changed... i have 1,2 b16 gears 3,4,5 gsr gears... but as 94delsol Vtec said above it really depends on how much you hit vtec....

Shade93- thats a large tb for a stock engine. I would put the stock parts back on, that large of a tb is doing noithing for your engine, and a stock fuel rail will be ok, up to a couple hundread hp.

I've got same b16a swap and b16 tranny and 3k in 5th gear going only going 50?! I know the gears are short but not that short, stuck in class at the moment, but will check mine out once I'm out.

something to think about would be getting an LS 5th or if you want to boost later on LS tranny all together.
