Default Made a DIY rad "cooling" plate

So we were bored around our shop the other day and i came up with the idea of making my own rad cooling plate. I don't really buy into the whole cooling aspect of such items (correct me if I'm wrong), so the general idea was to cover up the huge hole there since I added the intake.

If it really does any "cooling" i figured maybe it will help keep the cooler air down where the intake entrance is. Thats why we didnt include any slits.

I didn't really take it seriously at first, just something to pass the time, so I bought a thin piece of aluminum, and needless to say my methods of cutting it and bending it didn't cooperate with the thin metal.

So my good friend Shaun really wanted to dive into this idea and he decided to take a swing at things, using a thicker piece of metal. Surprisingly it's come out very well so far.

Heres the progress pics.. (cell phone pics BTW :p better ones up soon)

Smoothed all the cuts with an air grinder.

Painted black for now, it may get painted gold to match the ends of the J's strut bar

The pics dont really do it justice, the bends are amazing looking and cuts came out great

comments welcome

Thanks guys!

We just put it on the side our work bench, put some vices on it and bent it slowly after measuring with a straight edge. More pics up hopefully today!

Thanks everyone, I'm tying to talk my friend into us making other ones

Actually I thought what my friend Shaun bought was aluminum but turns out it was just sheet metal. Aluminum is recomended so it doesn't rust. This was just a test to design it. If we make another one it may be out of different material. The thickness is .045".
and is very sturdy.

I decided to paint it gold since the black shows some of the small tool marks that got on it. I'm going to go with the gold form the EM2 civic since it looks really close to the ends of the J's racing strut bar. The black also takes away from some of the nice lines and cuts that came out great.

Anyways heres a shitty cell snapshot quick. We put our shops sticker over the bare metal before painting it.

I never really understood the purpose of a cooling plate. I can see where it might help with an S2000 cause of the intake being up there and what not, but not on anything else really. Looks good tho

Truthfully, I can't believe this crappy idea turned into a great DIY. When you first sent me pictures of that cardboard, I laughed out loud. I'm truly impressed. It looks great guys. I honestly think Q could be a mechanical engineer, he's always coming up with lil 'trinkets'. Good **** boys.

True true. Thats why I stated that I did this mostly for looks.

Well It's going to be re painted today, since its got scratched a little bit and after the Carlisle show we may have to make another one out of a different material seeing as how it got a little surface rust on it from water ( which was expected seeing as how its made from sheet metal. )

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Honda-tech does suck now. The Type R forum was awesome, everyone in there was a big family I swear. But since I sold the R and bought the S, it's all about s2ki :-)

Thanks for all the comments guys. I repainted it gold from the EM2 civic. It came out nice but isn't an exact color match to the gold on the J's bar

Kinda looks like it blends in in the pictures but its darker in real life
