Default Cam gears don't align

It's a little hard to tell here, but the intake cam gear isn't facing up when all the notch marks are lined up. But if I move the intake cam gear facing upwards completely, the notch is a tooth higher than the exhaust sides. Any ideas?

That's how it was on my B20 when I was changing my timing belt on it.

That looks fine, but is that how it was before you loosened it? or is the tensioner not tighten in the picture?

They're supposed to look like that. When you tighten the belt, they'll straighten up.

when I tighten it, it stays about the same. My problem is that I have work on other motors, and this is the only one that the intake cam looks like that. The tick marks line up, but the up arrow is about 30 degrees to the left.

Yep it's dead on. The two notches need to be facing eachother just like that. If you take a straight edge you will see that the notches in the gear actually sit level with the head surface where the valve cover gasket sits.

when the notches are aligned like that, you need to look and see if the arrow on the timing cover is aligned with the white tdc mark on the crank pulley. that is how you determine whether it is all lined up.

Yeah, I know, and I have that mark lined up too. I was just seeing if the cam gear was normal or what.

There's just not enough tension. The ex gear is slightly too far CW and the in gear is slightly too far CCW. If they were a tooth off it would look more noticeable. Once you properly tension the belt you can put it back to TDC and verify that the cam holes are in the correct spot if you're still worried.

The gears look to be in exactly the right spot to me, although the belt looks a bit loose up top.

The UP arrows are really just a general indication of direction, so you don't get them 180 degrees off when aligning the hash marks. The hash marks themselves are what is important.

What do you mean goes back to the left? Like, you turn the camshaft with a wrench to get the arrow up, and then it pops back to the left? That's the valve springs pushing on the rocker arms and cam lobes. You need to use a small screw driver or pin punch, or allen key to help keep the camshafts aligned, and get those hash marks lined up with one another.

They state it does not work on non-vtec heads, how true is this?

Obviously it wouldn't. B18B cam gears are much farther apart than B18C cam gears.
