Roll bars (barz).... I'm troubled

I'm troubled. It seems like we're on a two or three week rotation with these roll bar (harness, race seat, style bar) topics in this forum. The feedback most of our regular membership gives is exactly the same every time. Manufacturers are selling these "style cages" or "image barz" to the younger import crowd and (through ignorance alone) might also be selling a false sense of security.
Along with at least a hundred other idiotic products on the market for import cars, these things are by far the ones that make me scratch my head and wonder what the hell people are thinking. I know they're marketed as "show" products, but perhaps there needs to be some sort of safety study on these silly things in an effort to get them out of the average street car since we all know they won't support a cardboard box in a roll over or even a simple collision. In fact, you're probably worse off having a kit like that in your car.
Maybe I'm just getting older and don't understand, but I can’t help but think that you'll see lawsuits against these manufacturers in the future. Furthermore for those of you who instruct, would you allow a car equipped with "style bars" onto the track at speed?

yeah, style bars??? If i'm techin' at an autoX I sure as hell won't let those pass!! And I sure as hell wouldn't let a so equipp'd car onto a track either
style bars are the dangerous and pointless, they do give a person who buys them (or the passengers in the car) a false sense of security. why not just get a real roll cage, then you will be safer, none of this BS.

Rollcages are usually black, not blingety bling chrizzome. They also don't have tiiiite bends that accentuate the contours of your doorjam as well as envelope your head in pimpy goodness.
Maybe we should make a "Most Common Questions Answered Here" thread and sticky it to the top.

Does this forum do stickies? And can it do stickies that can't be edited - so we could have a sticky FAQ that doesn't get full of silly comments? That would be sweet - I'd be willing to do a first draft.
- What brake pads are best?
- I want to start autocrossing - What mods should I get first?
- What is better? Tien or Endless Zeal?
- What about airbagz/hydroz?
- How can I lower my car more than 4"?

GSRwBOOST had a sticky going in the Integra forum. I haven't seen it in awhile but thought it was worth it... especially for the same old questions we see.
John, I bet those "barz" have a ton of legal disclaimers stuck all over them which, in theory should keep the majority of liability off the manufacturer.
The problem I see is the vast difference in the mindsets of the street boyz and the racing community regarding the issues of safety vs. style. I doubt that our collective words of wisdom get much attention from those who want to canyon race or worse... Until someone seriously want to enter legit competition such as auto-xing, I think the issues of safety before style isn't really there...
to all the idiots in street cars who bust their heads on "strret barz"

**** you *******! I came here to ask a simple question! If you want to hate then don't reply you dick.
What you mean is "I already thought I new the answer to the question that I just asked, and your answer didn't fit and made me look stupid when I was hoping to look cool. So, you're a dick."
To heck with barz - someone boosted my avatar!

Want me to ban the guy who jacked it?
Want me to ban the guy who jacked it?
Just give him a stern talking to. NO, wait - that might kill him.

You guys type one up and I'll see if I can persuade Dustin or Mike to make it stick.
legal disclaimers or not... the put the 'bar' in the car and the think its a race part. Its all about the look for the riceboy. If it looks fast... it is... no matter how many hundred pounds of unsprung weight it adds.
On a side note, my car is currently sitting at Kearney racing in Md having a roll bar built.... the butchering of my 'street car' has started. I'm dropping off my harnesses tomorrow to have them installed as well while my interior is out and we're drilling stuff.
