2002 I4 belt changes?
Hi folks, I use to be more active on these boards when I had my Civic but I'm here now to ask for some help. My wifes 2002 Accord is at 92,000 miles, I know the timing belt needs to get swapped, should I have the mechanic do the water pump belt while he's in that tricky spot? And what other bets should I have done? My mechanic told me he'd replace every belt in the car for about $600.
well, the timing belt drives the water pump. The other main belt to replace when doing the timing belt is the balance shaft belt. If the accessory belts are worn now is a good time to replace those as well but those are easy enough to get to anytime so if money is tight you can skip those.
things to replace when doing a timing belt...
timing belt (obviously)
balance shaft belt
tensioners (inspect and replace if needed)
water pump
oil seals

Wow, thanks so much, now that I remember he did mention the balance shaft belt, my father in law is good with car repair, what would be a good day fix aside from the timing belt?
if you'd like to attempt this yourself, or with help, take a look in the Accord FAQ sticky for a write-up. The write-up was done on a F22B1 (94-97 EX) but is very similar to your F23 engine.
Nice, so many things if I just opened my eyes! I've got a couple quotes coming in, looks like over $500 for the pump and belts. Thanks for all your help!
yeah, a timing belt job costs. I haven't had one quoted at a shop myself but from what I recall people posting on here it usually seems anywhere between ~600-800 depending on what all is being quoted to replace (just belts and pump or oil seals/gaskets as well).
