Do a compression test/leakdown test_ If that all checks out good, you might just need at timing belt change___
I have broken a few timing belts in my past previous cars, and the valves on those engines never had damage, threw on a new belt and car drove like before__
If you broke a belt at high rpms maybe you'll have valve damage but under 4k most likely not_ well thats my experience anyhow__ Just do a leakdown/compression test_ Its easy to do if you have a air compressor_ you can find the leakdown/compression tester for pretty cheap_ I got mine at harbor frieght and it works just fine**
If you were closer to Wisconsin I would so drive there and do the test then if the test is good, I can change your belt for you in all under 4-5hours_ its easy to install a new belt, just time consuming_ =] GOODLUCK**

Will have leak down test done today - she rented a car for a week.
Will keep ya posted.
thanks again,
Dave
Right, but the local yard only has a d16y8 and it has 220k on the odometer. Found some guys who say they can do the swap with that...
What kind of complexity is involved in making the switch?
Meanwhile, tonight the leak down test gets performed.
thanks,
Dave

Change the timing belt and you are good i have snaped t belts and never destroyed the valves the d is not interferance motor.. Do not waste money on new motor just get it timed correctly torque the bolts to spec get a book.. And youll be good.. Its a easy job for a pro it shouldnt take more then a hr.. If i had a spare t belt and it broke i could do it on the side of the road.. and has few spare tools.. D are the easiest to change t belts..
timing belts are easy 2 change reguarless, just getting it in time is sometimes the hard part, i throw everything a tooth off it usually works good.
z6 and y8 t belts are the same the a6 are the longest t belts and the b7 are in the middle and the z1 or b2 are also diff not sure.. There is 4 diff D series belts.. lengths.
a trusted BMW mechanic took it apart. Rods 1 and 2 either broke or fell off the crank!
