Was getting the car ready for the season and while tuning today on the dyno the head lifted around 33psi, fresh motor along with the head work, cometic gasket with hylomar spray, new arp studs etc.... What are you guys using, the L19 head studs or just the normal ones? Your imput would be appreciated!

Sorry guys I ment 35-45 psi, what are the tensile strength of the GE studs? I think the L19 are like 280000

Ive seen people have bad luck with cometic gaskets. Also know a lot of guys are making big power and boost on off the shelf studs (ARP, GE, AEBS) Sure it isnt something tuning related? Doesnt matter what stud or gasket you run if the tune is off itll lift.

I was kinda thinking the same, im no tuner, what in the tune would it be to make this happen? #1 had water in it, #2 and 3 was dry, and #4 a few drops

when you install your studs are you screwing them all the way in and then backing them off a quarter-turn? I think i've read that not doing that could cause problems, but im not 100%

Detonation will do it usually. Also make sure you dont have a sleeving issue like a dropped sleeve. Thatll cause it to not seal and push coolant.

im sure its not the sleeve issue or detonation. Im going to maybe talk to my guy about the misfire comment.

So maybe try a GE gasket and studs now also, do not think I wanna pay $300+ for L19. If the GE studs work T1 then they should work for me.

detonation is what causes head lift aka pushing coolant. whats your total timing? you may have to cut it down a couple degrees to keep from lifting the head.

i would also get a oem gasket....and yes hylomar is the ****!

we are not running much timing at all, running c23 also. And we even hooked up a detonation sensor to the motor with head phones to make sure.

When a motor misfires...there is no pressure in that cylinder. I fail to see how a misfire would cause a HG to go?

Check with a straight edge to make sure a sleeve did not drop.

If it's a GE block, did it have the step deck on the sleeves? GE leaves their sleeves up about 3 thousandths to help HG seal.

I ran shelf ARP stuff and didn't have any HG issues that wasn't related to the bottom end/sleeves having issues.

Good luck.

You really have horrid luck with that car.

I had HG issues back to back. I kept fixing it, it'd work for a little bit, then go to the track and it'd push coolant.

Kept running it and finally tore EVERYTHING up to find out the sleeve sank and caused me all sorts of headaches.

Tune

or

wrong sized headgasket.

It's been recommended, to me at least, that you should run a half size bigger than what you need. That takes the headgasket out of the equation and still seals the same.
