IM Gasket Replacement
Im just starting to do some work on my car... hoping you can help me out with a dumb question
im trying to install a new thermal intake manifold gasket on my b16
is this as simple as unbolting the IM and sliding the new gasket into place or do i have to remove a bunch of stuff before i can have enough room to do this?
the gasket is pretty thin so i was figuring if i can get it unbolted i could just slide it in... thanks

Make sure to have fresh coolant on hand. You'll have to unbolt the support underneath the manifold and disconnect the bigger coolant line on the passenger side. The coolant system should be drained prior to IM removal but you can get away with quickly plugging the hole as long as you are careful not to spill coolant on electrical connectors. If the coolant is dirty or old, empty it before removing the IM and refill after install with fresh 50/50. Only ever mix coolant with distilled or similarly purified water. You should inspect any lines you disconnect for wear or it wouldn't hurt to just replace any old ones while you're there. Also remove all electrical connectors so you don't end up tugging on the wires. Label both sides of each with masking tape and a marker. Some techs reccomend using a sealant on the manifold gasket. It works well if you only apply a very thin layer, keeping away from the interior edge of the runner and port openings. A fuel-resistant sealant like Permatex Aviation Sealant must be used if any sealant is applied. I would gently clean out any deposits on or around the injector tips and carefully wipe clean the IM runners and intake ports. Oil inside can drip out while you are installing it and adversely affect the gasket's seal. Make a note of any runners/ports that are dirtier than the others and what they are dirty with. Bleed the coolant system when you are done and leave the heater on high when you start the car again.
