Sounds electrical, like a bad ground connection, except for the brake lights. Just charge your battery, if it happens again, then you know something is causing enormous strain on the battery. I could be alternator, or a blown circuit. Wait. Since the switch is bad, the circuit to turn the lights on is always on drawing some current continuously. Not much but it will take its toll. Look for a new swicth as quick as you can and see if that don't solve the problem.
