Default n00b question....which exhausts DONT have the "bottlenecks"??

There are 10,000 threads on exhausts, but dont really answer my question. I need to get an exhaust to help my REBUILT NA motor exhale better, but I dont want one that has bottlenecks. If Im not mistaken, most axle backs like the Spoom need to be fixed by cutting off the flange and putting on a new one. And then some B pipes need the same alteration. I dont want to go through all that. I was thinking about the Mugen Twin Loop, but I dont know if its got those "bottlenecks" or not. I do like that it seems to be one of the more quiet exhausts out there. Any others out there that I should look for? Quiet is a plus, but if it has a silencer for long trips, then that will do. Thanks for the help.

Ryan, who doesnt know how to cut and weld exhaust piping

What are the modifications to your car?

SMSP has a good design.
Kakimoto R 70 mm (but you need the proper lenght cat converter)

Its a full NA setup, basically everything but rods. I was looking into SMSP but dont really know much about their setups. Id rather get a full cat back but will check out other options. I dont want to get too off track on this thread, but does SMSP have a full cat back? or just B pipes?

my sheepdog n1 exhaust doesn't have any.. its 60mm all the way from the cat to the exhaust. no bottlenecks. jdm rules! this exhaust was made for the JDM ITR, but was modified to fit my GSR.

Im not that worried about getting the absolute best exhaust, I dont want the most expensive one I can find just for the name. I know from reading the boards that SMSP is top notch, but apparently a full set up from them is not cheap. If I can find a full set up, even it it might make a few hp less than another brand but is hundreds cheaper, then thats the one I want. I will sacrafice 2 or 3 hp to save a few hundred beans.

why?

as of right now, my entire exhaust is a bottleneck. I have enough money sunk into my motor and think I have reason enough to worry. Or are you just saying that the typical bottlenecks dont really hamper performance?

I'm saying that the Miniscule bottlenecks that most people worry about aren't going to hamper performance. The only time removing them is going to play a large role is if the car is either Forced Induction or Highly Modified. Most of the people out there worrying about bottleknecks don't have any reason to worry but they heard this and that on the internet so it must all be true..

If you Engine is fully built with all the bells and whistles then go Custom and get something that is a straight as can be and Under Axle Exhaust. If not just get an exhaust that is large enough and leave it at that.

i agree 100%. for most people anway. you can have pre-bent aluminized tube put together for pretty cheap. talk to thermal exhaust and ask for jon. he is a great guy and they might be able to cut you a deal if you also get one of there cans. good luck

FYI,

The larger diameter axle backs that are designed to bolt up to the stock B pipe or B pipes that bolt to the stock axle back tend to have bottlenecks so they can work with the OEM donut. If you are running a USDM header (2" collector) you can get a 2-1/4" cat and a 60mm cat back system that is 60mm at the B pipe flange and you'll be OK. If you are running a 2-1/2" cat the only commercially available system that has a 2-1/2" ID at the B pipe flange is the Kakimoto R which is like 70mm OD. Otherwise you need to go with a custom system to ensure a 2-1/2" ID at the B pipe flange.

Stock ITR B pipe and a 2-1/2" cat used with JDM headers.

The stock ITR B pipe bottleneck.

This was the bottleneck on Jason's car with his 60mm Tanabe RM cat back when using a 2-1/2" cat and a Toda header.

The above mod netted 4 whp through out VTEC.
