i was actually planning to do exactly the same, but didnt think the bulbs painted amber would be bright enough. those bulbs are tiny. by the way, looks NICE!
i think you should give us a step by step on how you did it.

uhh~ all you gotta do is get nail polish remover and wipe the color off the top of the inside light cover .. it will be real bright amber after . hehe .. save your self some work.
I accually went a slightly diferent route with mine, I took the plexiglas lens out of the top light and replaced it with a transparent blue one. It puts a really nice blue glow on the white needles.
If your really bored, put in a JDM Type R cluster in. Needles light up yellow. Numbers are amber. Very noticeable from the outside. Cut the older cluster plugs, get some 92+ cluster plugs, and rewire it, convert to an electronic VSS and your set. I take mine to 9000 so those old clusters are weak.
i painted my gauge backround white...
it looks good but when i turned it on that night..wow..for some reason it lights up fire orange..its looks like a flame..hehe
illl get pics soon

and here it is lit up at night. All amber, wow!
yeah i made my climate controls red to match my stereo head unit buttons. i just removed the unit and unscrewed the bulbs. then painted them red and put em back in. really easy and looks great. (sorry, no pics, but easy to imagine)
