Icon6 d17a2??

I recently looked up this engine and it seems pretty decent above other d series including my d16z6. But it hits vtec at 3200? If I did get this engine is it really any more different than the z6 other than numbers? I was also planning on a turbo setup.

im guessing its like a **** gsr i think. theres a switchover and then theres an actual vtec point. like bigger secondaries on the cam is the switchover at 3200 then at 5800 or so id say real vtec kicks in. it still stops at 7800 and thats alot of vtec for it to only kick over once at 32.

beyond that besides being newer it looks like any old d series.

i doubt the actual vtec kicks in at 3200 though, i mean, there is the VAFC but i've never heard of a factory D series kicking vtec at 32

Do you plan on swapping the entire motor in? I think that question might be more important than when VTEC kicks in...

just as a reference the 98-02 accord F23A1 (similar production period as the D17) VTEC comes in between 2800 and 3500 rpm depending on throttle position, and probably a few other factors. these motors were built for better low speed torque.

The d17a2 doesn't have typical VTEC like the older d or b series motors. Before vtec it only opens one of the intake valves about half way. When vtec kicks in it locks the rockers like normal but only opens to the 'full' amount. It doesn't flip over to a bigger lobe like the older motors. As for swapping it. It's a decent motor for fuel economy and practicality, but if you want power of any kind, it's not the platform to swap.

I was just wondering because I wanted to swap the entire engine in. Either that or just stick with the z6 but put in a d15b7 cam that I have in my old engine? Ive seen a thread where someone did that and he had small gains. Thanks for the help guys.

just my opinion, but if you've got a spare cam you're wanting to try for "small gains" send it off for regrind and ensure small-moderate gains.

the z6 is arguably the best d series motor honda ever came out with, if yours is still trucking along with little to no problems, dont go inviting any. the COP (coil on plugs) arent cheap and tend to go on the fritz more than they should

Yeah it's doing awesome.. sadly I haven't wired up vtec yet and as you can see from my signature, I'm not going to be that great with that. But I defnitely want to try out that b7 cam. Is it really that risky to try it?

running your vtec wires really isnt hard. you can run them straight to your ecu in about 5-10 minutes. but i dont think you will see any gains from using a d15b7 cam on a z6, not to mention vtec wouldnt work

Oh, yeah I completely forgot about that.
vtec is that easy? cool so what would I need besides a proper size wire?
