96-97 and 98-00 ek rear HATCH difference
for 96-97 ek hatchbacks i know they have identical hatch/lock design and 98-00 ek hatch has the same locking mechanism were you can only open the trunk from the rear of the car, whereas 96-97 theres a release on the side panel
my question is would a 96 trunk work on my 98 civic hatchback. i know it would bolt on but if would it function correctly.. sorry if this has been covered already..
all input would be really appreciated

actually ive got a 97 hatch and i cant open my hatch from the side lever. i have to take my keys out of my ignition, get the **** out and go all the way around to the back and open it from the lock on the outside of the hatch
the inside trunk latch is cable operated and it sounds like it needs to be adjusted tighter or it's broke. I had the same problem only with my gas filler door. There was a plastic
"stop" piece right by the latch that was broken.

A 96 hatch should work just fine on a 98. You could move over the lock assembly and the release handle assembly above the license plate from the 98. Personally I like the 98-00 lock and release setup better. The cable release on the 96-97 is on the car side and has nothing to do with the hatch so no issues there.

I think the problem was something along the lines of the latches being different sizes. Metal had to be cut in order for the other hatch to fit on the car.
I'd keep looking for a '96-'97 hatch instead.
And now to answer a few other things I saw mentioned in the thread.
The only differences in the rear of the '96-'98 hatch versus the '99-'00 hatch is the taillight design (color).
CXes did not have a rear wiper, but DX did. The CX also came with the unpainted stubby roof spoiler and the DX came with the two-piece, metal and plastic spoiler with the color matched top. This didn't change for the entire '96-'00 generation.
To the guy with the '97 who can't pop the hatch from inside the car, sounds like you might have a broken hatch cable or the cable has released from the latch or the interior lever.
From what I've seen (on here, IIRC), you can put a '98-'00 hatch on a '96-'97, but it requires quite some modification.
