Default h22a bore question.

ok this is probably a stupid question, but. i took the head off my h22a swap that i'm about to do to throw on a new head gasket. i figured i would check out the bore while i was in there. i know the liners are odd, but do they require the normal cross hatch? from what i can tell there is no crosshatch. there are a few up and down scruffs here and there, very very slight though. there was a tad bit of oil residue in the intake mani. i figured that was just normal pcv oil film. i didn't know these things have a close deck design. anyway what does a good h22a bore look like?

A freshly honed FRM cylinder should be smooth as glass. No crosshatching. After years of use, slight vertical scuff marks will show.

Pic from Honda Tuning.

Unless there are deep vertical scratches, DO NOT try to have your block re-honed. There is a specific procedure and stones used for honing FRM, and is not necessary unless there are deep scratches.

And be sure if you decide to have it re-honed, that they have specific H series experience.

Not to be off topic, but does that mean that if there are no deep vertical scratches you could technically just throw new pistons/rings in and call it a day? or am I wrong on my info?

The honing prcedure in case anyone wants to question their machinest. If standard size is still within spec of 3.4256-3.4260. A stone made for high silicon aluminum alloy 600 grit, follow with a felt shoe and sunnen silicon compound should be used. If over size is needed, the honing steps are 280-400-600 grits, then polishing. But make sure they have the correct stones for this type of material.
