Default for those of you paranoid about theft

amazon has the battery powered motion detectors for 15 bucks. these little dudes can be tossed nearly anywhere in the car and are not something thieves even look for often. the other end blasts if you stick it by your pillow when your sleeping. anyway, for you poor bastards with no garage this is the cheap way to add another layer of security. basically lets you know the thief is there while they have no idea that you're aware

if it's factory SEALED...it's NOT used. common sense

it's warehouse deal...so most likely it was shipped somewhere, upon arrival the box was messed up...so it got sent back. that happens a lot, it's still 100% brand new...it just, cosmetically, wasn't up to the retailers standards.

Thank you for the find, that's a good idea. Another great thing you could do, is purchase a GPS tracking device (i've seen them for $200), and put hide it under the back seat...that way if the car does get stolen, you'll know where it is.

Thats the way to do it, just make sure you get a good enough unit with a good transmitter, and hide it so well that it takes you 3 hours to get to it so they never find it if they do get your car.

Also i really like the Panasonic Network cameras, I have a wired version of this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...3&st=panasonic camera
and its great, you can set it up that if it picks up movement (sensor can be calibrated to your liking) Or heat sensor pickup and it then will email, MMS etc a picture or group of them to you. You can also log in to it from anywhere, even your iphone and watch live video, its like 15fps or so depending on what you setup streaming at.

Cool good find. Im gonna toss these inside of my R since the sti gets the garage. I can see my car from my window so at least if the thieves bypass the alarm this thing should wake me up.

If its parked in a driveway you could also get a 2nd unit and wrap it in plastic wrap and seal it with tape and mount it somewhere outside hidden from common view but in an area where it would pickup someone pulling into your driveway or walking in.

If you have one of these IN your car its going to do jack if they just flat bed it or throw it on wheel dollies to push it away because in that case they'll cut your hood cable, pop it open, cut the battery cable to kill the alarm and then slide the dollies under each wheel and push it down the street to a tow truck. I'm 90% sure this is what happened to mine 10 years ago because there was NO way I wouldnt have heard them outside had they been out there any longer.

Oh and not to give all my tricks away but some things I have reccomended in the past to people:

* Alarm backup battery
* 2-3 Sirens, 1 open area 2 hidden hard to reach areas or 1 there and 1 inside in a vent.
* hood and hatch pins to set off your alarm
* make a 1/8" thick piece of steel to cover the area around your hood latch and reroute your cable Through the engine bay out of easy reach (people either cut it at the area behind the fender liner or if thats rerouted they cut the bumper right where the latch sits so make that block off plate.
* layer upon layer and even throw in a dummy system if you can, pl,enty of stereo shops have old or broken alarm brains on hand and will glady give you one, Mount it in an obvious alarm mounting spot away from your well hidden real alarm brain and make all the wiring loom all around the under dash

* The more time they waste the more of a chance they will be caught or give up.

LOL, some of these are pretty good about size of what it picks up.

I actually ordered one of these exact units years ago kinda for a door chime at the shop but never used it, if I didn't toss it during spring cleaning I'll have to dig it out and try it.

very interesting. I often park on the street in San Francisco next to my friend's apartment so this seems like a good idea. Any ideas of where to put it in the car for maximum efficacy, yet minimum risk of accidental activation?

floor board or some area that runs no risk of being tripped through a window. play around with the install and walk around you car to make sure it doesn't trip unless someone is in it.

Heres another one I posted in the security thread:

http://www.xenasecurity.com/product/.../main/showall/

Its basically a lock with a alarm. Has built in movement and shock sensors so basicially if the lock moves or tilts in anyway it goes off. I have it on my club. When they get the club off the alarm goes since its attached to the club. Its a really loud piezo siren like sound and works good if they bypass your alarm somehow. I sleep 20 feet away from my car so this thing should wake me up.

Those panasonic cameras look good but does anyone know where to get net cameras like that which are battery powered? There are not any outlets easily accessible where I want to place it.

Harbor Freight has similar units for $16.99. I've been recommending these for the past 8 years or so. They used to have a website but drivewaypatrol.com hasn't been renewed for the past few years.

The DP sensor is sensitive. Sometimes a cloud moving along and blocking the sun will trigger the sensor. This doesn't happen at night though. Also, it seems to be a bit more sensitive when the battery gets low. The sensor will trigger the chime and will keep triggering it even if there's no movement. Of course, that just means it's time to change the battery!
