2000 Honda Civic HX Automatic = Broken CVT Tranny
So the inevitable happened, my CVT tranny on my Civic HX finally broke. I need help!!!! What do you guys think I should do? Sell it?? Convert it to manual?? I don't want to replace it with another CVT because it'll just break again. I don't want to spend more than 2000.00 to repair it otherwise I'm just going to junk it/sell it. Would it be a better option to just sell it with the broken tranny?? I'm so sad right now, it was my first car and I loved driving it and now it just sits in my garage waiting for me to decide it's fate......help?
All in what you want. Do you want a 5 speed? or do you like the automatic. if you do the labor in pulling the transmission it will save you in the overall cost of the rebuild.
I would put in an used CV trans in it if the car is still in good shape and you are going to keep it for awhile. If you still want a manual, the cost may be more than it worth. I really tired with the horror stories with auto trans in Hondas and Acuras. The manual trans seems to have less problems as long as you don't burn out your clutch.
I bought an HX aroundddd 5 or 6 years ago with the same problem. Not knowing what I was getting myself into I ended up paying 600$ to get it fixed. Only to inevitably have it happen again, the second time I did my homework and swapped out the auto for a manual myself. Definitely a learning process, the D16y5 in the HX requires a couple of extra things the "auto > manual" swap guides don't mention. After everything was said and done I put around 600$ worth of parts into the car.
Some things that were different are:
When you get a 5spd ECU from an HX you need to wire up the primary o2 sensor since it's different from Auto to manual (I have no idea why)
Also the IACV is different so you either need to drill a 5spd IACV (like from an EX) into the back of your IM or buy a 5spd IM from an HX. (Which I opted for) you would use the same wiring diagrams that are readily available here on Honda-tech.
Other then that everything's about the same. I guess I would say that the o2 sensor is the biggest headache because a new one costs around 400$ and I wasn't ready to spend that kind of money for one stupid sensor.
But doing something like this is definitely not as hard as it may seem, it took me around 2 solid days to do, and it was my firs time "really" working on my car. OH and I was 16 at the time lol
