1990 Civic Cable clutch not fully engaging?
About a month ago I swapped transmissions from a 4 speed to a 5 due to the 4 speed failing. I installed a new clutch and everything worked fine for awhile. A few days ago I noticed that the clutch petal does not fully engage. (meaning petal does not come fully back up) This caused minor slipping. Under the hood I noticed that the clutch arm on the transmission does not return back down completely causing the problem. I messed with it for a bit once and it worked for that day. Last time I drove it the problem returned. How should I approach this problem? Could something as simple as lubricating the arm be the fix?
I am having clutch issues myself and can maybe offer some suggestions:
Did you replace the spring for the throw-out bearing? The spring is probably the biggest factor in getting the proper clearance and release for the bearing.
The clutch cable can also be binding or worn. A new cable is a BIG improvement over an old one. I was impressed with the new cable I just put in my CRX-a Teflon-type coating on the wire itself, and it was already well lubed and packaged.
The lever needs some lubrication too though. Honda recommends molydenum disulfide grease for the lever and release bearing shaft. To do it right, you would have to pull the lever out (take out the bolt in the release arm) and grease the shaft lightly. But you might be able to work some grease onto the shaft from the outside. No harm in trying.
Honda recommends 3-4mm of play at the end of the lever and 15-20mm of play at the tip of the pedal.

I didn't replace the spring for it seemed fine. The clutch engaged fine for probably a month before it decided to mess up. When I did the swap the arm was stuck in the transmission and would hardly move at all. I managed to get it out and used the arm from the old transmission it moved freely and easily when I installed it. If I remember right the arm should fall back to its original position more or less and when I messed with it I had to put weight on it to push it back into position though the clutch pedal itself doesn't feel any harder when disengaging. Though the cable probably could use replacing the cable itself isn't causing the problem.
i had the same problem but all i did was adjust the cable to how i like it best and it hasnt given me problems since. maybe if you find something to hold that nut in place.
well its not the cable. I can fully unhook the cable and the lever on the transmission still does not return fully down like it should.
