need help with smog.
my crx failed smoged. CO and NO are good. my HC is high. MAX at 15/25 is 134/108. Measured at 315/316. i changed out the spark plugs, wires, and air filter. the distributor is new. oil is good. the second time i measured 275/307. any advice will be appreciated.
EFresh, yea you should have asked the smog tech...they go to school for that stuff. sometimes replacin the CAT makes all the difference.
and minime...is this your 1st time gettin a smog?! you should know that the minute they pop the hood, or see the smoke comn out the tailpipe (whichever comes 1st) hat its a fail, possibly a trip to the ref

first time around, the tech told me it was misfiring. since i just got it from a guy that didnt take care of it much, i forgot about the spark plugs. plugs was bad so i assume that was the main reason. its stock and has 198XXX miles on it. second time around the tech didnt tell me much besides the fact that if i go do a retest it ll be half off. my idle was screwed up so i adjusted the idle control all the way up. it idles at .600 with all power off but occasionally it ll drop low but im assuming its because the fan turns on. before i purchased the car, he smog the car 4 months prior the selling and it passed. looked at it and HC was below 100. now after examining the exhaust, the back canister has a leak in it. will that affect the high HC?

i did a compression test i got 180-105-90-170. looks horrible. i searched how to tell if its the valves or rings, it mention that you can squirt oil inside to help seal it temporarily to boosts the compression. didnt have anything to "squirt" it with so i poured some around and let it dripped down also poured oil around compression tester where it screws in to the spark plug holes. it boosted 2 and 3 up by 15. question is can compression affect high HC?

adjust the valves. they shouldnt be 10-15% different across the board.
High HC is Unburned fuel. Means your car is running rich or ECU is reading a rich condition. If Nox is good then Cat most likely good or at least doing its job.CO is partially burned fuel. How old is you 02?? you are def running rich some how. How does car run?? Hows your charcol canister?? pcv valve? check your fuel pressure and FPR. just a few things that may cause these readings. check these and get back with updates. Also throwing on a new cat will not fix the problem because Nox is good. even if Nox was some what high replacing cat will help no doubt but most of the time band aids the real problem. My guess is O2 sensor bad.
if the o2 sensor was bad he would have a trouble light.
mostly, rich or lean is decided at the ECU.
when i failed the first time, i was lean as usual.
when i passed easily the next time by doing what i said, i was the same leanness(is that a word?)
My valves are right new o2 sensor, new pvc, new plugs, dizzy is 1 1/2 years old as are the plug wires.
My car actually still runs pretty good considering the retarded timing.

my NO is 82/67 and CO is 0.23/0.21. good standings. o2 sensor im not aware of its age but it worth buying one and just replacing. will be doing tests soon. car runs pretty smooth. thanks for the tips!
An O2 sensor gone bad does not always set off MIL. Could be lazy and cross counts very low and MIL will not come on. A big enough vacumn leak picked up by a sensor tells O2 its running lean, there for ECU thinks engine needs more fuel and adds more fuel to already some what rich condition causing high HC readings. Not saying your method to get it to pass wouldnt work.If it does than he should try it. Not worth throwing parts at it. Have some one look at it. My first guess with those readings would def be misfire but if you say it runs smooth then that rules that out.
bad o2 sensor=automatic fail. plus you would have to reinstall the check engine light bulb. and theres no way youre goin to pass smog with your setup so quit thread-jakin
well heres an update. I found out about seafoam and decided to use it. after 100 miles of driving my car started to blow white smoke/over heating. pulled the rad cap off and fluid was bubbling. all indicating a blown head gasket. so i now im guessing that the owner i bought it from mustve used some sealant and the seafoam broke it down. i took the head off and the gasket wasnt as bad as i expected it to be but still bad. valves were caked out. so i got the head cleaned, valves sand blasted then resurfaced, and did a valve job. put everything back together , compression 165 all across and passed smog with my HCC at 78/56.
