HELP car won't start
so this started about 3 weeks ago when my wife took it to work. when she was about to leave work it wouldnt start, I went over and tried to jump it and it would try to start but it didnt. i put a battery charger and it worked. Car sat for 3 weeks and now it wont start, I took the alt, and started to test them and they told me the starter wasnt so good. I bought the starter and that wasnt it. the car wont even turn over but when i put the battery charger it turn over but wont start, feels like the battery is dying little by little when the charger is on. Battery is 100% charged, new starter, and fairly new alt, i check all the fuses and they are fine. please help me out if you have a clue on whats wrong. thanks!!!!
I'm not a mechanic, but here's a thought.
Many batteries are sealed these days, but I would look at battery fluid if possible, if you haven't already. The battery could read 100% charged with low fluid because it's a different capacity battery with low fluid; like a motorcycle battery.
Obviously, substituting another battery might tell you something.
One thing that isn't entirely clear--when you say you "put the battery charger", do you mean you are jumpstarting the car(50 amp), or charging the battery? I assumed you meant charging it.
A borderline battery might start after an initial charge and run for awhile, but if the fluid were low, I suspect the charging system (voltage regulator) would be "overcharging" this "lower capacity" battery, which would reduce its capacity even further by causing the remaining fluid to heat up and evaporate, thus causing the car not to start next time, even after a charge from the outboard charger.
If the battery is the sealed type, a free battery test by Kragen or other auto parts store might give the clue.
Good luck.
