02 Civic Questions (struts and Transmission)
Ok, so I have a 02 Civic. There are a few things going on with it, and I have searched, but I have come up pretty empty handed. The civic has around 155K on it.
I have noticed lately, that there is a popping in the passenger side when I go over a bump. I was going to switch out the struts, but I am wondering What type you would recommend? I have noticed a lot of parts stores carry KYB struts. Are they any good? Are they direct fit? Is there anything out there is that is better, without breaking the bank?
Also, the car seems to have lost a little torque. For example, in an automatic, when you put the car in drive and take your foot off the gas, the car will roll forward. My car no longer does that, it just sits still. We have a slight hill in our driveway, and the car will roll forward when I have it in reverse, until I give it some gas. I know that older cars tend to do this when they get some miles on them, as I have been in others like this. But what do you think is causing this? Are there bands in these newer transmissions that can be adjusted? Is there a torque converter in these transmissions?
I know a little about the OLD automatics, but these newer ones are out of my league...
I apprecate your help or guidance with the above questions. Hopefully, I can keep this baby rollin' down the highway!

KYB is a known good general brand. get ones that are specific to your car. you would need struts if they are blown and are really bouncy, otherwise im pretty sure its not a strut problem. is your suspension stock now?
Yes the suspensions is completely stock. Never been touched. The ride of the car is not bouncy, but more harsh that it used to be... when I hit a pot hole now, I get a good jolt, I used to just float over them...
I never even thought about the ball joints.
I think that I changed the drivers side when I did the wheel bearing over there, but not the passenger side. The control arm bushings could probably use a replacement as well. I think that it's cheaper to start there, and work up to the struts if needed. I appreciate your help with this! I'll keep everyone updated as to the solution.

That. If it's the original transmission, consider yourself lucky that it still has life in it.

Im having the exact same front suspension woes as this gentleman in my 01. I've already changed the control arms and its still there, so the next thing to check would be balljoints?

I thought that these tranny's would go 250-300K without a hitch. Don't tell me that they are just the same quality as the other slush boxes out there...I don't want to hear it!
I'll take a look at that thread, thanks!

well, if the tranny is just getting tired, is there a place that people "in the know" go to get a new one, or a used one? If/when I have to get something else in there, what is the best option? Like I mentioned earlier, I would like to hang onto this car as long as I can...

Warranty is key when buying used. It also doesn't hurt to ask some of the local grease monkeys. Word-of-mouth is usually the best advertising. You can also check around craigslist, car-part.com, etc. for anything local.
If you had your heart set on a new one, I'd do some research on prices. No sense in jumping down the rabbit hole chasing after the first "deal" that comes along. The best option? OEM. New or used? That's your choice.
