Replace or Rebuild?, Lude on its last leg. (almost)
sorry if there is a thread that applies to my question. im not familiar with how to get the H-T search to function correctly yet.
my 98 SH has almost 200,000 miles on it as it stands right now.
its running reliable, but with lots of power loss/smoke/small oil leak.
but again.... reliable.
compression was between 145-155 throughout all 4 cylinders.
i have the money for either a rebuild or a new motor swap. but im unsure as to what direction to take it.
its a bit tougher to find an h22a4 for the SH as i understand and i have a shop in the area that can rebuild my h22 completely for around 2k.
would it be a wiser/cheaper choice to try and find a replacement low milage motor, or rebuild mine from the ground up and get it running close to new again.
my apologies again if this is a re-post.

Rebuild, but choose this option only if you are planning to rebuild yourself and not have a shop rebuild for you. I don't trust local shops with engines.
If you can't work on this car yourself, then you'de be better off having the shop swap out your current engine with another lower mileage h22a4.

its always more reliable to swap the engine out for a another engine exactly as honda made it, untouched by anyone else. I picked my long block from a reputable engine supplier for 900 bucks..
they have tons of base model engines.. care to share your supplier?
Its a tough call. While I love a stock, never cracked open Honda motor, a very well rebuilt motor should be just as good. Thing is most places are so clueless on FRM that unless I knew for 100% sure that they had major FRM experience, I would rather have a 40-60k JDM Mystery motor for >$1,000
That being said, I think you're screwed b/c its an SH motor......G/L finding a decent used one.
