91 DX crx, My third gear grinds if I'm shifting above 3500 and only if i'm shifting up to 3rd from 2nd. My transmission in new only 3000 miles on it. Anyone with anything would be some help....
thanks.
thanks.
i have a 95 civic EX and one day my third gear started grinding but when i left from a dead stop and shifted normal it would do alright but if i down shifted to third it sounded fucked,or if i was racing from a dead stop it would grind the hell out of third. but what it was is the third gear synchronizer went out . and sorry to say this but thats in your tanny and if its not fits it's just going to get worse. thats a real know thing to happen to mustangs.

If you aren't already using Honda MTF, try that. It should alleviate the problem to some degree. I've tried both that and regular motor oil, and the MTF seems to work alot better.
use the MTF but your synchro in third gear is rosted. Time to buy a new one. Just call around and you will most likely have to get a 3rd gear kit and that will cost about 200.00. If you are worried about it grinding shift under 3000 and it should not grind or just rev match.
Good Luck.

if you're gonna shell out for the synchro, think about buying the rebuild kit. it costs $420 and includes all new bearings and synchro rings.
if you want just the synchro, i'd get it from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com where it'll cost about $150.

Tranny work is pretty serious work.. if youre not all that experienced, i wouldnt try it. Changing synchros looks easy but its a pain in the ***. Theres lots of precision work to it and clearances need to be measured.
Have you taken a look at all your alternative before you dive right into your countershaft? If may not even be the synchros. I had the same problem a while back, my 3rd gear would grind bad at higher RPM. I was pretty sure the synchros were toast, so i picked up a new tranny. Well since i picked up a newer d16a6 i decided to put my older Si tranny on it. NO grinds to my surprise.
Check your clutch, clutch cable, tranny fluid and any other variables. If you have a short shifter, remember not to beat up on your transmission..
BTW: if you can double clutch during your 2-3 shift, it will prevent the grind.. but it takes practice to get a shift smooth enough and fast enough. All that matters is that you match your engine speed with your tranny speed.

How about this????? Come to Minnesota and pick up some D-series trannys I have from doing B-series swaps. I'll sell them really cheap. I test drove these D series engines/trannys prior to doing the B series swaps so I know they are still good.
Here is what I have at the moment:
88 21 spline ZC tranny (uses Integra axles)
90 20 spline ZC tranny (uses Integra axles)
90 20 spline SI tranny (uses Civic/CRX axles)
91 20 spline SI tranny (uses Civic/CRX axles)
91 20 spline DX tranny (uses Civic/CRX axles) (I have two of these, one is still in the car waiting for a swap)
90 20 spline HF tranny (uses Civic/CRX axles)
You can contact me at the number listed below if you are interested. I will ship to your door if you pre-pay shipping charges first.

double clutching is also upshifting
your in 2nd
put clutch in and shift to netral
let clutch out
let rpms drop to that 500 rpm before the rpm it would be at in 3rd
put clutch in
put into third
let clutch out and mash the gass
slows you down majorly but if your tranny is gonna blow itll work for daily driving

you don't really need to double clutch an upshift, just keep the clutch in long enough for the mainshaft to slow enough to run at the same speed as the countershaft for that gear. in fact, it match rpms faster than if you're using the engine to slow it because you don't have the flywheel making it spin.
what i would do first is really exaggerate the shifting...
from second go up to neutral
then to the right to line up for 3rd gear
then put it into 3rd gear.
see if it still grinds then. you could just be hitting the gate on your shift which is making it grind. a 3000 mile tranny should NOT have syncro problems unless you had it in neutral, revved up the motor and tried to put it in gear.
