Default Please Read My Plugs - JRSC Setup

Hey All,

I bought a CRX with a D16/JRSC setup and I swapped out the plugs the other day and although I do not know a ton about spark plugs, I know the plugs do not look ideal.

I know the car is running rich because I can literally smell gas on a constant basis. For example, if I am in a drive through with my window down, the smell of gas creeps into the car and it's pretty strong. Plus, I can feel the engine bog and I am assuming this is from too much fuel and the engine is loading up on fuel.

The engine is a D16a6 with a JRSC running 6lbs of boost. It has the basis bolt on's and it is currently running the stock ECU, stock injectors and the JR FMU. One of the first things I plan on doing is converting to OBD1 and having this car tuned ASAP.

Can anyone read my plugs based on these pics and let me know what they think?

Here are the pics:

only true way to really read the plugs, is make a pull, and immediately pull them out.
they dont look that bad, do you have a wideband on the car>? is the evap system hooked up or venting to the atmosphere?

Yes, there was a leak in one of the gaskets. I replaced the gasket and the leak is now fixed.

A couple people have recommended a wideband. Can you elaborate?

I just put some NGK BKR7E's in, so I will pull them soon and compare them.

For the most part, people have gone away from reading plugs with the advent of wide band O2 sensor setups. The wide band allows you to monitor your air/fuel mixture accurately from the warmth of your driver's seat, and see under most all conditions that the fueling is correct.

Only real reason to check plugs these days is to see if you're getting any detonation (small specs of aluminum on the plugs).

Do a search for wideband O2 setups and you'll probably get a billion hits.

My favorite is the PLX products

I love my aem wideband and Ill never run a fi car without it ever again! its sooooo worth the $200 upfront plus it gives you the ability to tune your own car down the road.

Hey All,

One other picture...

I noticed a similar color in the tailpipe of the car. Not sure if this helps diagnose, but I thought it couldn't hurt. It may just be rust, but it does look like the tips of the spark plugs are a similar color.

Not to jack the thread, but boostedcivicsir, you asked if the EVAP was hooked up or venting to atmosphere? How would having it hooked up effect the motor versus venting it?

looks like some kind of fuel additive is in it. torco used to give me plugs that color, other then that cant really tell much. put the new plugs in and maybe run a few tanks or drain it before getting tuned.
