gonna try to take the heat shields of the header tomorrow to see how nasty it is behind that ... as long as it isnt raining here ...
if you have already degreased it with engine cleaner you need some CD2 engine detailer

Use some oven cleaner. I have used it on a few of my cars and after 10min you can just wash the oil away.

Industrial strength simple green and a pressure washer. Spray, wait 2 min, wash. Repeat. DOn't leave it on, it is corrosive to aluminum.
i use simple green and water in a heavy concentrate as indicated on the bottle in a chemical sprayer you can pick up in the outdoors section of home depot or lowes, pressurize the bottle, spray the engine bay down good, let it soak for 10 minutes, rinse and repeat until it comes clean. Then use megs hyper dressing on the hoses and other black rubber under the hood for conditioning.
i dont want to have to get down and scrub the stuff off at the moment i already did that and its gonna take awhile to get this stuff off .. its caked up pretty thick .... i want something i can put on it let it sit then spray off and get most of it off then i will do the dirty work and get in there and start scrubbing away .. so what would be something good for that?

To answer your question electrical stuff will be fine just cover up your spark plug holes and put a plastic bag over your distributor and fuse box. Its not always needed but i always like to be on the safe side. The one time i didnt cover my spark plug holes i got water in there and caused a miss fire on one cylinder and had to replace the spark plug.
Other than that pressure wash away and hose that thing down with any of the products people have listed above..... A clean engine is a happy one. Plus if you have any leak issues in the future you will be able to pinpoint their location. Caked on sludge sucks.

I've used WD-40 in the past with very good results. I had that axle grease all over the place and sprayed it down with the WD-40, waited five mins. and it wiped everything clean with no residue. Something to try just in case you don't want to use a pressure washer inside the bay.
aight here are some pics of how far i got on cleanign it after using what i hate .. the purple industrial strength degreaser .. still isnt good enough for me .. i didnt have alot of degreaser left and it started to rain so i couldnt get the chance to take the heat shields off and clean the whole front of the block =( .. but will once its not raining and i get some more product to clean with .. lol .... this si maybe after 1hr of cleaning .. how u think its comming?

You get usually get all this cleaned at a local garage along with your gas tank (cleaned) for abouut $300...If you dont got the money than some heavy duty hard labor should do it.
not trying to pay anyone to clean it. atleast not yet. i'll clean it as best i can and maybe then it wont cost that much for them to clean the rest .. gonna take heat shields of tomorrow as long as its not raining and clan behind them ... i want my motor to look real clean like the rest of my car
An hour? Man that's some work to only get that amount of stuff off. I'm telling you. $2 can of over cleaner, spray on, let sit 10 min, spray with the pressure washer at the car wash, drink a beer and admire your clean engine.
I have some left I'm pretty sure, I'll hit the new teg up with some tomorrow to show you some before and afters of only spraying it on and washing it off.
aight, is your motor caked on with grease like mine is .. lol ... and yeah it was like 40mins to an hr of work ... i had to scrub everything to make the stuff a little clean .. i washed the inside of the bay first to try to get the dirt and grim off the sides where the struts are bolted and it didnt even get it off until i sprayed degreaser and scrubbed them just to make it look like it does now .... my bay is mad nasty =(
DO NOT USE THE STEEL WOOL ON THE PAINT, IT WILL REMOVE IT OR SCRATCH THE PAINT. Get your self a pack of those hard scrub nilon sponges that you can get a whole pack at the 99cent store.
I will go first and take as much as I can at the carwash with just the plaing water, that way it wont be such a big nasty mess once you start cleaning, Nylon brushes are good for hard to reach areas!! Since the engine and tranny are on the car still I will try to move and remove stove around as much as I can to clean those hard to reach areas, it would have been awsome if the engine and tranny were out but thats not the case.
I have never use oven cleaner but oven cleaner have come a long way now, Easy off comes in fresh lemon scents so it would be easier on your nose. ALWAYS WERE LONG GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASES, you don't want your hands to start iching or some nasty stuff to fall in your eyes.
Be paitience and do it over if you have to, DO NOT LET IT GET DRY, if you are using the purple or the green stuff, they work good but you can't let it seat for too long.
