I drive a 96 Honda Accord LX and the mileage just stopped winding at 103,428. Same goes with the mileage meter above it. I pressed the button to reset the mileage meter on the top and it did reset, but now its stuck at 000|0. The RPM and MPH, engine temperature, and gas meters run perfectly fine.

I took it to a few auto shop stores and they all told me that there's a special wiring that needs to be replaced in the cluster. I took it to a Honda dealership and they say they need to take a look at it first before diagnosing the problem (which will cost me $200 JUST to diagnose... screw that).

So I turn to HT for help.

From the sounds of it then it's *probably* a mechanical problem.

The VSS/circuit on the back of the speedo control both the speedometer and the odometer. If the speedo doesn't work then the odometer won't either. If cruise control doesn't engage and you have a CEL then it's pointing towards the VSS. No CEL would point at the circuit board (if you have the speedo/odo not working)

With just the odometer and trip meter not working I'd be leaning towards that little mechanical portion being gunked up.

I would first suggest you try to mash the reset a few more times with a little bit of force to see if you can loosen it up. If that doesn't work there is a removal thread in the Accord FAQ with pictures that is incredibly helpful.

Follow that and then I believe there is a cluster dissection thread as well linked in there.

 

The odometer on your car is more mechanical with gears, etc. Since you already tried pressing the trip reset; now, use your key and press in the maintenance required slot and see if it makes a difference.

It it really is busted, you might just need to replace the speedometer head. The odometer reading will then be different unless you or a shop that does speedometer calibrations, etc. matches the odometer reading. Not worth the money IMHO to get a shop to do it.

I had the same problem on my 94 EX. I just pushed in the maintenance slot a few times and it started back up. My car is off about 20k miles (give or take; long story) but I'm not worried, not gonna sell it ever. But yeah... try that.

so which method worked puding the reset hard?? i have the dame problem
