I have a 94 EX. I found a Z1 at a local yard for $400. My hope is to have a car that gets 50 mpg, but puts 200 hp on the ground too. Most turbo civic's don't retain A/C, right?

Is $400 too much for a Z1? I don't know the mileage on it yet. I ordered http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/155...ef=oss_product ,but I need to know if it'll be a straight swap from Z6 to Z1? Will I need diff motor mounts? Are there any must have books for 5th gens.? What source do most people get aftermarket parts for civic's from? Are there common upgrades to brakes, structural, suspension, etc.. Is a Z6 tranny a good comprise for economy and performance? Is a Y8's better?

Which free/ cheap programming software is best? Do I even need it for a 200hp goal? Some folks have said just use an FMU, new pump & MSD BTD.

When I did old Mustangs, I pretty much went to Summit Racing for everything. There is so much info on Civics out there to sift through. :-/

you can do either hp or mpg but i dont think you can effectively tune for both 50mpg and 200whp. chrome is a good tuning software and shouldnt cost much, if anything from a tuner. the motor mounts are the same for all egs (92-95 civics) but i would recommend some innovative/hasport mounts that are stiffer than stock to compensate for the added tq that will be produced. the only must have book i know of is a haynes/helms manual. z6/y8 trannys are pretty much the same, if not identical, and i would like to say you are safe brake wise if your ex has the 10.5" front brakes, just get some good pads, rotors, and some higher boiling temp brake fluid. suspension is really up to you as far as what route to take as your model civic can also use suspension from a dc integra (94-01). you can retain a/c but it will not blow as cold in boost (obviously) but will work.

 

If auto manufacturers could make a boosted car with 200 hp out of a 1.6L that gets 50 mpg we would live in a different world. Good luck though I'll be interested to see what you come up with

I have ALWAYS heard if you stay out of boost you'll get the same mileage you did before. Maybe you guys aren't with me. A Z1 gets 50 mpg stock.

 

a great deal that affects mpg is aerodynamics,

a poster on d-series.org get about 64mpg turbocharged,(idk about 200whp though)

he molds his body to be extremely aerodynamic, little to no wind resistance

The Z1 is bad to boost. The rods are weaker because Honda purposefully made them lighter. There isn't a lot of information on this motor here, so I figured it's worth mentioning. Unless you're rebuilding it... then just starting with a Z6 block would be easier and maybe cheaper.

The Z1 has a little different valve setup and the intake manifold is very restrictive. The throttle body is tiny. Good for fuel economy, not good for power...at all.

If you could get the 3 stage VTED D15B head, maybe that would be easier to accomplish your goals with.

Maybe an RPM switch could activate the first VTEC crossover, then the ECU could trigger the second crossover to the "wild cam" profiles?

 

It is possible; however, there will be tradeoffs. If you want better mileage, you're going to need a longer geared transmission which is the antithesis of fast. Again, this is an achievable goal...depending on the setup and chassis of course

 

It sounds like a 3 stage Vtec D15B is what I'm looking for. Boostable but still very efficient with the lean burn mode? Are all D15B's, 3 stage V-tec's?

No, they come in a variety, v/t... non- v/t & dual stage vtec, ( 2 solenoids..... what some call "3 stage")

 

Stage 1 - VTEC-E ***RUNS ONLY 12 VALVES****
An implementation of VTEC for economy, it turns off one intake valve per cylinder in the 16-valve engine, and attains lean burn mode. The lean burn mode gets the air to fuel ratio above the 14.7:1 stoichiometric ratio and thus enables extra fuel saving.

The VTEC-E mode engages in the D15B from 0–2500 rpm.

Stage 2 ***ALL 16 VALVES***
From 2500–6000 rpm, the VTEC-E mode turns off and all of the engine's intake valves are used. The engine is now like any other normal VTEC engine when the VTEC *ISN'T* 'on'.

Stage 3 - VTEC
From 6000 RPM (up to rev limit) the engine's VTEC wild cam is engaged, increasing performance

200hp and 50mpg is not possible. And that dude on d-series doesn't get 64mpg, he did it once, instantaneously on the freeway.

 

they can do it easily even with todays smog and safety standreds. I bet there are euoropean manufactured cars that make 200hp and get 50mpg, check it out. They have gas with less sulfer and less smog and safety standreds. this direct port injection they have now is amazing.

Whats the difference in a stock z6 at partial throttle and a turbo one at partial throttle. Granted there is a restrictive turbo in the exhaust stream and u have more pumping losses due to the ic and all the piping but that wont add up to much and u can compensate for it with increased ve from freer flowing parts. A stock z6 will get close to that mpg. Op u might want to go with a lx/dx/cx tranny due to the longer gears. 200whp will fill very nice with those gears. Of course u will need a decent ems and a good tune for both power and good fuel economy, theres ur lean burn mode.
