An LS1.
You need to read and decide for yourself. Visit the Foced Induction forum and look at some builds.

Building a motor needs to be done for your needs, all you're going to get here is people telling you to go with their personal setups.

Z6 and y8 Engines do pretty well on boost. As wiz said just do some reasearch, and figure out your goals. If you just want alittle fun setup, a cheap greddy kit, and a z6 or y8 swap is a pretty nice set up.

Dont get me wrong the 1.5 is fine to boost, especially the jdm 1.5vtec ive seen really nice numbers from it. Just a prefference i like the 1.6, and having vtec while boosting, it makes a pretty fun setup : )

If you're going for all out power, D16A6 port and polished with a big cam is the best.
For a street car, you can't really go wrong as long as it's mpfi. You don't want the CX 8 valve motor, you don't really want the VX motor although it wouldn't fare too bad, DX, HX, EX/Si motors will all do fine.
VTEC does fine with boost despite what fools may tell you. The overlap is not ideal for FI, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it. A non-VTEC with a cam designed for turbo will beat a VTEC with a N/A cam. And there's really no reason why a SOHC turbo with a good cam can't spank a DOHC turbo. with a good cam. In theory, the SOHC has a better valve angle.

Re: whats better to boost.d16 or d15 (sipolt89)
I'm partial to the 1.6L because they have beefier rods and that extra torque.
The early D16A6 blocks are the best with cast iron main caps, the D16Z6 engines are great too, but IMO the D16Y8 is a pile of crap. My shop has had to replace more D16Y8 engines due to rods knocking/slinging through the block in STOCK form than any other D series engine of any kind combined. I think they have a poor oiling design, or weaker rods/bearings or something.
Ultimate engine IMO would be D16A6 block with a D16Z6 head. On a budget you can drop in 1988-1989 D16A1 (comes from 88-89 Integra with flip-up headlights) because they are the thickest stock D rods Honda ever made. With the SOHC you also have a ton of piston choices too, so you can get whatever CR you want to boost with. I'd actually raise the Cr up from the 9.2:1 and go with maybe 9.5:1 or even 10:1 if you plan on good tuning. Less boost is needed if you have a touch more compression, but the tuning does need to be dead-on to avoid detonation.

Re: whats better to boost.d16 or d15 (B18C5-EH2)
BTW for what it's worth I do have a semi-built D16A6 engine (high CR though, not turbo) and it is a very strong engine even with the stock non-VTEC head. Like someone said earlier the A6 is a very potent engine with probably more cam choices than any other engine, including B series stuff. The A6 was the original bad-*** Honda engine that people built the hell out of long before the days of swaps, so there have been cams for it since the 80's.
I may have a B18C5 swap in one car, but I love my SOHC in my daily driver.
