Default VSS CEL comes on when down shifting.

I just bought a 90 Integra and I've got it down to just this one check engine light. It only happens when downshifting or deceling in any gear. The speedo or cable is really noisey and sometimes even sounds like a belt squealing. The speedo and tach work. Sometimes the speedo is bouncy but that is it. I tried pulling the gauge cluster out but can't really see how. I pulled the two screws and then tried pulling the plastic piece that surrounds it but I cracked the plastic and then put it back together. Any help would be awesome.

I know on the DA's to get the gauge cluster out you have to take you whole plastic peace off, like it goes all the way around the ac stuff(Haven't been in a DA in awhile) But I know its a pain....

Yes you have to remove that whole trim piece. To remove that, you first have to remove the panel on the drivers side that's above your knees. I'm pretty sure there are only 3 screws to get that out. 2 are visable and 1 is behind the little tray on the left side. The top part of it has clips and just pops out.

The bezel trim piece has 2 screws above the cluster. On the bottom of it there should be a screw on each side of the steering wheel. You pull off the 2 ***** for temp and fan speed, then you pop out the little panel behind them. There should be 2 screws behind that. The last one should be behind a little tab that pops out on the far right side of all the climate controls. After all those you can carefully remove it.

To get the cluster out, it's easiest to first remove the speedo cable at the tranny it'll give you a bit more movement with the cable. Either way, it's a PITA. You pretty much have to unclip the cable and plugs on the back of the cluster by feel (not a job for someone with fat sausage fingers).

When you put it back together, make sure the cable is fully seated in the cluster. You will hear that white plastic clip click into it's groove. When the interior stuff is back together, hook the cable back to the tranny, again making sure it's fully seated using the metal retaining clip.

Just be careful the plastic clips and trim pieces are easy to break. I've done it enough times now where it's not hard, but it's always irritating.

Well thanks for the gauge cluster removal info. My car doesnt have the clip that holds the speedo cable in on the trans. Any ideas on what the problem might be or when I get it apart am I going to have to do some careful inspecting?

Not having the clip is most likely the cause of your whole problem

The cable stays in in the trans and my speedo always works. Just bounces from time to time and the noise it makes doesnt sound like its coming from there. Where can I get a clip. I was hoping to have the dash out by now but work has been very busy so it will be another thing for me to do this weekend.
