What do you Accord owners think?
I'm in college and I need a reliable car.
Found a 2002 Honda Accord Value Package with 68,000 miles owned by old people in The Villages, FL. One owner. They want $6500 and they wont budge.
It has no power windows, locks, seats. No cruise control.
KBB says around $6300.
I read that there is alot of problems with the automatic transmission.
I've never driven an automatic car for more than like 10 mins at a time. It seemed to drive fine. Other than me trying to press the brake with my left foot. hehe.
What do you guys think? Could I find a better Honda than that for $6500 or less.

A 94-97 Honda Accord for like $3k ?
You can get the EX easily for that price which has power accessories and cruise control.
Alternatively get a Civic EX.

I've beens searching for a car for the past 3 months.
I've already let one good car slip away by sitting around.
So the transmission problem could happen in this car? Or would it already have happened?
Honestly, I've been looking for a Civic because that is what I drive now.. and I've been looking for something thats no older than 10 years.

The "value package" is just a DX model with a couple small things thrown in, like floormats. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think other differences were such little things as body-colored side molding, a different radio with 4 speakers instead of 2, and maybe 1 or 2 other things. It still has the less-powerful, 135 hp engine.
IMO, that car is extremely overpriced.

If it's a florida car, I'd say take it. I'm in northeast ohio, and the rust that comes from the salt during the winter sucks big time. 68k on the car is a damn good find if they only want 6500 for it. Plus it's owned by old people. That means most likely, they didn't beat on it, so it's still in pretty good condition as far as the motor is concerned.
I have to say that it's a bummer that it doesn't have power anything, but that's at your own taste if you really need/want it.
Also, its mostly only the V6 trans that goes on the 98-02 accords.
Good luck with your decision!

It has dual front air bags, AC, Cd player, power steering(yay). I'm mainly concerned with reliabilty. I'm pretty much scared of the transmission.
I'm not concerned with the HP. I drive an 87 Civic Si right now that is supposed to be getting 91hp but its so old i doubt it gets 65hp. haha.
I wish they would budge on the price. I'll be scraping the bank dry.

wat too high! try craigslist, u'll find a lot of 6th gen's and most of them are modded for like half the price they are asking for but i warn u as an owner of the 6th gen BE PREPARED to lose your transmission if its auto....i did a 5 spd conversion so luckily i have no more fears of this but be prepared
yeah keep looking. there are people selling 5th gen accords for great prices all the time. check gen5alive, hondasociety and on here for cars that are for sale
Okay. I'm gonna offer them 6k. if they dont take it they can shove it.
I've been looking at Civics off craigslist and holy crap people are scam artitsts.
I looked at a 2002 for 6000 today and the transmission wouldnt shift until after 5k rpms. and the seat belt wouldn't even work. bubble tint and the floors were stained yellow.
I just want a stock car. I'm not going to mod it out. I'm a girl. I have very little mechanic ability besides changing the tire, oil, filters, and other misc stuff. haha.
I think my only other option is having someone go to an auction for me. I could probably get an 03 civic ex with 95k for 6200 plus tax and tag.
I'm tired of looking.

you are a butt.
If I really wanted an older car, I would just fix mine.
But thanks everyone, I just wanted some opinions on the auto transmission. It was like the 3rd time driving with one. So I was already scared.
Thanks.

You have an 87, what's wrong with going to a fully loaded great condition 97?
Or instead, let's buy an overpriced most basic model 02 with known transmission problems
*edit*
And might I add, I'm in no way trying to insult you.
The 5th gen, as I've suggested, is near bullet proof and does not have any real issues save for bad power window regulator or two and maybe a door lock actuator. $4000 would get you a pretty damn good example of those years with sunroof, power accessories and leather (if you want) all you'd need to do is change out the fluids and be good for 200k miles.

My main dilemma is finding one with low miles. Until then I'm driving the 87.
I'm just going to keep saving and looking. The right car will find me. haha.

. it started missin really bad so naturally u think blown head. a new set of wires and radiator and it runs like new. it currently has 248k and just did a manual swap with a t2t4. my car spends alot of time above 4k rpm with still no problems. all in all their reliable so dont let the age or mileage scare u and always go with what feels right
And stop ragging on the 6th gen accord, Honda automatics in general are nothing to scoff at. If you can drive stick and are comfortable with it, why not?
Not sure where you are, but I know someone selling a clean 2001 EX coupe in NH for $5500 with 121k.
Honda's are almost bulletproof. I prefer the lines of the 6th gen, but whichever you choose will be good.
My first car was an automatic 02 accord coupe and it lasted very long due to proper maintaince (drain and refill of tranny fluid every 3rd oil change or 6months) and driving condition; best bet if your interested in the car is to get it cause that one hell of a deal or if you really want a standard accord continue your search.
