thats is kool. everytime i do a swap for the hoimes i tell them to get the usdm motor so it can be bar'ed so they dont get ref'ed. i have like half a dozen hoimes that have JDM motors. this is sick can anyone eles confirm this? i am going to tell the hoimes about this if it is true and start to make them legal hahahaha. thanks man good looking.
JDM motors will pass just like USDM motors but all the smog and evap equipment and sensors have to be hooked up and functioning properly with no CELs and certain other things that are different between JDM and USDM will need to be changed over to USDM specifications. Each motor's list of changes are different, but that's the long and short of it.
Keep in mind though that there are some Refs that didn't "Get the memo" so your mileage may vary depending on which Ref you go to. I just BAR'd my USDM swap 2 weeks ago and asked the Ref if he was BARing JDM swaps. He said no. I told him that there are refs in Socal that have done it this year (referring to EJ8 Man 's experience) and he said he wasn't surprised. But he still won't BAR a JDM motor. Moral of the story: contact the Ref station you plan on getting your swap BAR'd at and ask them before you commit.

if it is legal now according to EJ8 there should be some kind of document stating it. if anyone can get ahold of it people can print it and they will be albe to get your car BARd at any station no matter what the ref guy says lol <----- that would be tight. where did you get your car BARd with the JDM motor EJ8?

You don't need more references/successful bar stories/links to documentation. If in doubt call the Bureau of Automotive Repair and ask them directly 1-800-622-7733 end of story. Do your research and don't rely on conjecture... If the laws have changed in the last 2 months then that is unfortunate, but I doubt they have.
If you have problems with Refs that are not up on current events find one that is and go to him. In So Cal I went to Pierce City College for my inspection. Ask around at any import shop where people are going to get their cars BARd. It takes a little bit of time and research to do it right, but having a legal setup is worth it.
As for emissions the USDM versions are typically identical to JDM, at least for B series. Not sure about K series, but understand that Japan has very strict emissions laws as well. Their standards are typically good enough for the US and so the same parts can be used.
Good luck
