Default reason why you HAVE to use the honda transmission fluid>?

convence me why? automatic trans, 97 lx sedan. what does it do inside, is it thicker, so the clutches grip hard or what? i don't see a difference in the shifting really, still shifts ok if i ease the gas keep engine around 2k rpm, it slips into 3rd, floor it? at 3k-4k rpm, it shifts great. would the honda fluid fix that issue?. i put in the costal auto trans fluid designed for imports. ithe reg honda fluid its $8 bux a qt and wow thats expencive.

the argument I have always heard usually is something like this: The engineers designed the transmission to be used with that specific oil. Therefore, since every oil is slightly different the honda mtf is going to be your best choice.

Those who try to go much deeper than that on this site are either well educated in the field or bullshitting you. Iif you are willing try some different oils and see what you like best, go for it. Although I would say the honda mtf will probably be best in terms of longevity. Right now I am using honda mtf and I really don't notice smoother shifting if anything I think the valvoline oil I had before was better.

pretty much. it was designed with that oil in mind. $8/qt isnt that bad it doesnt take all that much to fill anyway. Every two years or so. Having said that Ive used Valvoline/Castrol ATF for a few years with no side effects. When I bought the car it had a nasty shuddering at a certain speed and rpm, changing fluid fixed it.
