hey man its cool to see new enthusiasts, since you are new there are 2 ways to make power, but stay in dd category. 1. do usual bolt ons header, intake, exhaust, ecu tune etc..... or 2. boost i had a 95 ex with 10psi set up on it and made a good 180whp, and it was dd and never had problems. also when you go boost the mileage may increase depending on your driving style.{not on the pedal all the time} which is hard!!!!!!! so there is some starting points
and if you stay single cam keep that z6 its the best in us.

Just drop a b18b/a in it, they can be had for pretty cheap, and theres alot of room for improvements later on

I have an ebay turbo kit on my '95 ex coupe (Z6) and it works great. The reason people make such a stink about those kits is because they DO take a decent amount of custom fabricating (intercooler piping, extra parts to buy) but they really do work decent and reliably if you install it right. As long as you properly setup the oil feed and return lines to the turbo, it will last you for years of rippin on N/A guys.

Also, another good part of the ebay kits is, THEY ARE pieced together from someone just like any other kit you would buy on craigslist ect, so budget permitting, you can upgrade one or more items in the kit as your budget allows, and if/when a part goes bad in those kits, they are cheap to replace as well.

From what I have seen and heard, dont go with something like the greddy kit its a waste of money as it has no intercooler and only has the emanage blue to control fuel. Go with a custom setup and chip ur ecu and learn to use crome and tune it urself its way more satisfying in the end!

If its your first civic just have some fun with the single cam. You can boost it, and all you'll have to replace later (assuming you get an ECU with your next swap) will be the manifold, and injectors dependant on power goals.

Any idea on how much money you have to spend on the car? or are you just looking into the future, no money at the moment.

If you're afraid to put together your own kit AFI and Peakboost both sell reputable kits.

Did your buddy ever pay for a new sticker for the car? If so they gotta have a record somewhere. Go up there with your buddy, and apply for a new title. If he has records of an old sticker purchase, have him bring it with him. I dont know how much it is going to run you as it is different for each state, but with a little time they should be able to put you an order in, and have it shipped to your house in about 3 weeks time possibly.
