hmmm... I drop a bolt into my girlfriends tranny....
Well, this sucks!! Im getting a b18b ready to drop into my girlfriends civic and I droped a bolt into the hole where the speedo cable thing goes into the tranny.
The bolt seemed to have gone a long ways from that hole. I spent over a hour today trying to find it with magnets, wire, and anything eles I could think of.
Does anyone know where the bolt could have gone? Could it have got into the gears somewhere
???
I have never split a tranny case apart, but need to learn. I have access to a Helms manual, and I have been taking things apart and putting them back together my whole life, so I may give it a try.
Do I for sure have to buy a new gasket set for it(spendy gasket at $120), and what about that "honda bond" stuff I hear people putting between the cases?
Can someone list the tools I will need? And where I can get them?
Thanks for any advice and info you guys may have.

I'm gonna assume a manual tranny. Those are easier to take apart if needed.. Automatics are a nightmare, I wouldn't know where to start with those. All the signs seem to point to a tranny cracking and finding the little bastard that got away. We all do stupid stuff, thank god you noticed it though.. I'd imagine you flushed the tranny fluid, but if you didn't, I wouldn't hurt.. I say go ahead and get that bad boy open and with the Helms as your guide.. You can do no wrong.
First things first though, Get a flashlight and tweezers and fish that little guy out.. I know it sounds stupid but as long as you didn't move the car, it shouldn't really go anywhere. Slim chance but hey..

Well the tranny is out of the car, it hasn't even gone into the car yet. Trust me, its not possible to get to with just twezzers. I tried everything. I have no clue where the bolt went, somewhere beond the differntial I know. Oh yeah, it is a manual. Its a LS tranny from a 1994 Integra.
If it droped straight down, it droped into the differential. U need to open it up to get it out for sure. You will beed a few sockets and a set of snap ring pliars. I dont even know what gasket you are talking about??? all you do is split the case and when your ready to put it back together, make a gasket of honda bond around the caseing. The good thing is all you have to do is open the case and not pull apart anything else most likely to find the bolt......hmmmmm, actually if you were unlucky you make have to pull the gear set, shift forks and and diff. theres a very good chance at it.......Mike

I will find the gasket on http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.net to show you.
Its number 3. its a gasket set for the tranny. Looks like its just a big gasket that goes between the 2 sides of the case.

they wont sell me any because "we are supposed to work on your car, not you" i told him to eat me then went to autozone and bought liquid gasket
its a cheaper alternative just make sure you get the good stuff.
Really dumb question. Have you checked to see if it's down near the drain plug? Remove the plug and see if it "just falls out."

Yes, I did that, and I fished arround through the drain plug hole with a magent, and some others things.
Alright, one last try. Since it's out of the car, try rolling it all around and see if you can hear the screw come "unstuck". Maybe you can work it down to the pan.
(And yes, I do realize you're probably thinking, "I'd have it out by now if I had just taken it apart right away...")

Well I went to Honda today and got some Honda Bond. It cost $18 for a 3 ounce tube!!!!
A friend (InfamousRRH) and I had the case apart in about 10 minutes. The bolt was sitting on the outside of the big final drive gear (no possible way to get to it with twezzers or a magnet). Only problem is, now we cant get the casing back together. it will go to about 1/2" within each other than just stops and won't go any further. Its not the snap ring, we tried that. does it just take force (how much? we gave it quite a bit) to get it the rest of the way? If we could have got the case the case to go back together, the whole operation would have taken less than 20 minuts.
I must say, spliting the tranny wasn't near as hard I thought it would be!!! When the time comes, Im going to install my LSD my self and not pay some huge amount of money to have it done.

Try putting it in a different gear before putting it back together. I had my tranny apart numerous times and it would go together very easily if it was in a certain gear (and I don't remember which gear that was).
