Default 90 crx restoration and build

I have a celestial blue pearl california 1990 crx dx with a stock d15b2, 244,xxx miles on it.

It runs like a champ although recently it hasnt been able to pass smog because of really high nox, so my plan is to take apart the engine to see what condition it is in and go from there. If it is usabled then I may clean and rebuild it, if not then I plan on swapping in a sohc zc or a stock d16a6, whichever is easier to find and cheapest.

The engine will be done first and then body and interior will get some attention, overall the body is 9/10 (2 small dings on driver side) NO rust and the interior is in good condition.

The rear bumper is mint, the front has some minor flaws(dents) Im going to try and repair the front bumper so I wont have to buy a new one before I repaint but thats way down the line. I took off the bumpers because I was checking to make sure there was no rust anywhere (my old 91 hf had a shitload of rust in the rear) and I also wanted to make it squeaky clean :D
Dont worry they are resting flat to insure they wont get deformed while off the car.

It is glass...most people consider this ugly on crx's and the cheap upgrade for a sunroof(which it is) but it works great for me no leaking or noise when closed.
here is some pics:

I had it tinted but took off the tint film so it looks pretty ugly from the inside lol I need to clean it up and it would look more presentable :D

Did you do it yourself or did you buy it with the sunroof? did you like it? did it leak at all?

Yes I know lol my first crx was a 1991 hf and it had rust in the usual spots( rockers and quarter panels and the rear bumper) so when I bought this I was in love to find absolutely no rust and that was main reason I couldnt sell it even when I was in need of $.

Well im leaning towards just swapping out the engine entirely because of its lack of maintenance and high mileage it would probably cost me about the same to rebuild the d15b2 than to just swap it with a low mileage sohc zc or d16a6. I will still keep the d15b2 and rebuild it but for right now my goal is to have this car running for summertime which is 2-3 months away. When I do rebuild the engine I dont want it to be rushed so i think if its out of the car and not needed atm then I can go at it with ease.

If you viewers out there would be so kind to share some opinions here on some motor companies that are based out of california, I am most likely going to be purchasing a sohc zc, I just want to know which one is the most reputable, I dont mind paying an extra 100 bucks or so for quality assurance.

engine: jdm sohc zc

1. CNC Motors - $450 + $130 shipping

2. HMotorsOnline - $499 + $130 shipping (couple weeks until they are in stock)

3. SOKO - $425 + $125 shipping

those three are located in LA or nearby and require shipping however I have a 4th option which is located close enough for me to pickup:

4. Attarco - $475

I already know that HMO is very well known but I will have to wait who knows how long, the others I have heard of but never really heard anything good or bad about them, any input on these would be greatly appreciated, and feel free to let me know if you have another place to recommend, I am located in the bay area about 20 minutes from SF

Also would you recommend rebuilding the engine or are they usually ready to swap?

thanks again for tuning in :D

SF bay area, just from hearing that I dont even want to waste my time with them but it doesnt hurt since they are local and I can go check the engine out in person before buying it.

Small update today, got some stuff disassembled and got the cherry picker over here from my buddies house, were almost ready to pull her out. Just need to take off the axles, motor mounts and shift linkage and then the engines coming out and the new ones going in...havent picked up the new motor yet but its going to be a SOHC ZC most likely from Attarco or maybe this other place nearby called Japan Engines, they specialize in imports and swaps :D

onto the pictures:

PROGRESS!!

plenty of space to pull the motor :D

Goodbye A/C :D

My spending limit for all parts and everything is about 1k, that is only because I want the car running in the next couple months and I cant save up anymore cash otherwise I would be looking into getting a nice swap bar'd(I know its not easy) so until then a zc will do :D also Im probably going to keep the d15b2 and maybe drop it back in later when its rebuilt with something sick :D
