Not really. Its a civic, so they're everywhere.

I see at least a couple for sale every week.

z6 is a slightly better motor...dont have to worry about a oil pump seizing up on you

92-95 civic ex/si-d16z6
96-00 civic ex-d16y8

civic ex cars are not rare at all...i see more ex cars than i do dx or hx cars. and single cam vtec isnt anything to get excited about lol but from personal experience i like the d16z6 a little better. it seemed like it took a beating alot better than my old ej8 did.

run p28 ecu with a jumper harness and get a z6. ive been 2 yrs on 10psi with mine with no problems. y7/y8s only have one oil port for the rod bearings as the z6/a6 both have 2 oil ports to lube the rod bearings. nothing wrong using a y8 oil pump. i have had a y8 oil pump on my z6 for 2 yrs and always have sufficient oil pressure cold and warm.

USDM '96-'00 EXes come with the D16Y8. USDM '92-'00 EXes come with the D16Z6. Canadian EXes might be more like DXes in the sense they could have non-VTEC engines.

I've also heard of people mention issues with Y8s but never seen/experienced them to have any issue in particular over the other USDM D-series engines. Specifically they mention the Y8 having fewer oil passages and such.

I've also had my Y8 for seven years without a problem. I had one other Y8 for a year before this one and also experienced no problems.

D-series manual transmissions do often have ISB issues though. I've had a Y7 tranny and a Z6 tranny both with the same issue; it's not limited to one or the other. $20 bearing, but you have to tear the tranny apart to get to it.

no, not rare at all.

I know a lot of people say that the z6 is a slightly better engine, but my old d16y8 is still running with 200K+ miles on it. It still has solid compression, solid oil pressure, steady idle, and runs like a top... and it's actually fun in my brother in law's 94 CX hatch.

you might be doing fine with your y8, which is great, but many people can and have attested to the issues they've had with them. my friend had a y8 spin a rod bearing, and a few weeks ago i picked up an ej6 for cheap because it has a y8 that spun a rod bearing and punched a hole through the block.

Oh, I know. I'm not disputing some people have had those kinds of problems with the y8s. I'm just saying that I wouldn't necessarily decide against a y8. All things equal, get the z6, but if the OP wants a 96-00 car, I wouldn't dissuade him from it solely because of the y8.

If you buy a y8 car and never have any problems with it, great! If it spins a bearing, swap a Z6 shortblock into it. Either way, not much of a problem given the current prices of D-series stuff.

Sure, the Z6 might be, according to some, a slightly "better" engine, but remember since they come in older cars you're more likely to run into other age-related issues with the entire car.

The problems Y8s are reported to have in this thread aren't even as common as say, window issues for '96-'00 Civics. Even that isn't so common that they all suffer from it.

The Y8 has a better intake manifold. And it's easier to check the oil.

Troof. And I haven't had a window issue in 219K miles either.

Maybe I got one of the good 96-00s lol.

Also Troof. I hate the dipstick on the z6 and on my B series.
