1986 Hatch, same as CRX?
Hi all, this is my first post here, but definitely not my first experience with Honda's (2006 Civic Si happens to be in my driveway right now) :D
I currently drive a 1996 Neon (boo!) and am interested in trading a friend for his non-running 1986 Civic. The Civic had the carbureted engine in it, and is blown. Included in sale would be a D15 from an EG.
My question is, engine-bay wise, is the 86 hatch identical to the 88-91 Civic and CRX? Also, besides the basics (ECU, harness, etc) is there anything special I need to swap a D series into this 86? Anyone know which axles and motor mounts I'd be using? I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find any info on anything before an 88. I'm hoping it's because they are the same as the CRX, under the hood.
I appreciate it, and thank you for reading. Hopefully with a couple of answers and directions I'll be on the road in a Honda in no time
EDIT: after some more research, it's looking like the crx is identical to the 3rd gen civic under the hood. Hoping to get some confirmation on this.
Also, what's the easiest way to make a hydro trans work with my cable pedal? Thanks!

i don't know too much about the 84-87 civics crx but they are very different from the 88-91 civic/crx. i've seen b-series swaps done before in 84-87 crx's, usually with a dohc b16a or similar b-series. hasport.com makes mounts for b-series swaps with either a cable or hydro tranny. i also did a little poking around and came across another forum with a coulple of guys discussing zc/d-series (like an 88-91 civic/crx) swapping into an 84-87 civic/crx. hopes this helps a little.

Was planning on swapping in the entire D15, I wasn't aware they are the same blocks? Do you know if the transmission out of this car would bolt to the D or would I have to use the D-series trans?
Thanks!
Thanks!

the 88 and up D-series engines will not bolt into the 86 hatch - all of the mounts are different - you would need to fabricate all new mounts
the engine won't bolt to the 86 transmission - completely different bolt pattern - you would have to use the 88 and up transmission - you would need custom axles and custom shift linkage
since the 86 you are referring to is carbed, it doesn't use a pressurized fuel system - you would need the complete fuel system (tank, lines, pump, etc.) from the 3g hatch Si model which was fuel injected - you would also need practically all of the wiring from the 3g Si
this is the 3g hatch engine - notice the location of the driver's side engine mount - on front of the engine, closer to radiator

this is the passenger side transmission mount - off the bottom of the frame rail (kind of like the EG)

Thank you very much, sir, this is exactly what I was looking for. Have you had experience with this swap or know somebody who does? I wish there was more documentation on the 3gs!
