thinking of buying a 88-90 Civic HB...need info please
As the topic says, I'd like to purchase a 88-90 Civic HB for a winter s#!t beater. I have a 95 Prelude VTEC right now, so I would like to get some more power into a Civic. What is a resonable price to pay for one of these and what would be a good motor swap that will give me anywhere from 160-200bhp? Do the B-series motors bolt right in or is a custom mount needed? What would be a decent price for a motor? Which transmission would work best? What are some problems with the late 80's Civics? What is the bolt pattern on the wheels? Will a GSR rear rotor/caliper bolt up?
Thanks for answering my questions.

First, I would be concerned about what to look for, run that Carfax, although not everything will show up. For instance, the car could have been wrecked, but not reported or even known about (driven home after wreck), but you will know if the car has been damaged. If the interior smells moldy, walk away, unless you plan to strip the car. Air freshner overpowering? (Trying to cover up mold, or maybe smoker- which is OK with me) Walk away. If the price is right, I can deal with rust, but only if it's $1000 and under. You want the lightest HB go with HF, you want something you can work with instantaneously, go with Si. Personally go with Si and work that engine.
I got suckered with my car, BUT the thing runs like a champ, and that's most important. I paid $2200 in January '01. About 8 dings, dented drivers fender, rust in right rear wheel well, 153K. I should have paid about $1200 for it. I lived and learned about purchasing Hondas. They have a high resale value, but I fell for this one.
Regardless, I love my car. Maybe $2200 was worth it?

What do you have against the 91 Civic HB's?
The 91's are the same as the 88-90 fyi. I paid $1575 for my 90 Civic Si with minor hail damage. Don't pay anymore than $2.5K for a winter beater. And yes the B16 is a nice swap to do on a civic. I prefer a B18A or B. More torque and if you ever want to you can put a B16 head on for VTEC.

I would personally look for a 90-91 Civic Si....best Civic ever IMHO
I'm not a fan of the 88/89's cuz to me, the dashboard is just ugly compared to the 90/91's (mainly the gauge cluster area)
But exterior wise, i like the 88/89's better because of the side molding...go figure
Price is VERY dependant on your region.
Nice Si's in my area can go as high as 5K. you people that say you bought your car for just over a grand....wow....that's just unbelievable to me. Even the crapped out cars go for 3K here

i got what u need i'm selling mine. igot b-series vtec 92civic front disk swap type r rear disk swap with gold caliper custom interior w/leather seat custom color w/ a/c cold. and lots more.
88-89 has the better looking bumpers also. As for the dash I don't think I really ever saw the dash of the 90-91 so I don't know about that, but I think my interior looks fine.
Can someone post the difference between the 88-89 and the 90-91 exteriors and interiors? What year was the Si offered? What was the power rating, motor size and number designation? Thanks.
