AAAAHHHH!! anyone with engine building knowledge
ok i bought a d16y8 bottom end and found out it had bad piston rings. i replaced the rings and bearings and went to fire her up it it immediatly jumped to 3000rpm and started blowing white smoke. i made a thread on here and people said it was cooland/ headgasket. i replaced the headgasket and started it again with no antifreeze andi still get the 3000rpm and white smoke and it pours out like a chimney. i have cheacked for vacuume leaks and trial and errored this civ to death. please help!!!!
the 3000 rpms is an ignition problem, do you have any trouble codes? (check engine light)
is it white smoke or blue smoke? make sure the PCV i hookep up correctly

when you installed the new piston rings did you check your ring gap, and did you clock the rings properly? most likely the high idle is related to a large vacuum leak.
it is blowin white like a cloud. i have no engine code accept for a o2 sensor that was on before the build. and when i found out the rings were bad the first time it had the same idle problem. does it have anything to do with the head? i put a a6 head on a y8 with the a6 intake mani
Check for bubbles, or excess pressure in your cooling system. I'd ask if you were losing any coolant, but it would be difficult to tell if the car is only turned on for short periods of time.
While the car is idling, try using a spray gun (set to mist) and spray water around the vacuum lines near the intake manifold. If the engine bogs, you have a vacuum leak and it's a matter of fixing the culprit.

Obviously you've NEVER done this cuz the idle will go down when you spray carb cleaner on it!!(with the vacume leak extra AIR is getting in when the CARB Cleaner is sprayed in leak it ADDS fuel and cancels the leak for a split second DER DER
repair engines much??? I've been rebuilding cars for 16 years and also worked as a small engine tech for 2years
I'm sorry i just noticed your in australia, maybe vacume leaks go up down there when sprayed with carb cleaner, just like your toilet flushing backwards!!! J/K man I'm not tryin' ta start a fight and I appoligize if i offended ya!!

great another n00bie arguing with sp33 again.
91civisedaner, did you ever think that by MISTING water around all vacuum sources (which water doesn't evaporate as quickly as carb cleaner does) would also visually reveal a leak because you could see it being sucked in, espescially if you used dye in the water...
o/p, have you ever set your idle properly? it's possible that some one messed with your idle screw... i have a z6 tb that some one messed with the idle screw on it, and when i start my car it jumps right up to 5 grand... scary **** lol
also, are you sure you don't have a vacuum hose and a coolant hose switched up?

if it is snapped in half broken then thats your Vac leak.
if you plug it enough to leave some airflow the idle should go normal.
when I forgot to connect mine back up after my new IM it went right to 3k. :-)
culprit of white smoke? dont think so.

did u hone the cylinder? or just throw new rings in and hope for the best? Did you measure your bore for taper and wear while you had the pistons out?

no i bought a z6 head off ebay and it would spin. (gotta love ebay). so i put my original a6 head on. yes i got the block honed. i took everything to a local machine shop and had it honed and rods/crank polished. i had help building the motor and the piston ring end gap was correct. do rebuilds smoke durring break in? it has only ran for a total of 10 mins didnt drive it.
There is not problem with either water or carburetor cleaner sprayed on the intake manifold to detect a leak at idle. Both with vaporize when throttled through a leak. Carburetor cleaner is flammable and warrants greater caution.
