Does Anyone Know About The Valves?!?! Help!!??
ok my brother blew his head about a week ago im trying to fix it the mechanic i called for the job said the valves were bent because when the "UP" on the cam was facing up 4 valves were sticking out so i took the head to a machine shop the guy did the work w.e when i came back the the same damn valves were sticking out but! he says thats how its suppose to be so does anyone know....???
ARE THE VALVES SUPPOSE TO BE ALL FLAT WHEN THE "UP" IS POINTING UP OR DO FOUR VALVES STICK OUT AT THAT POINT?

its a b16 (civic ex) and well i put everything on seems to be working ok got a leak through manifold but think its cuz havent tightened it hard enough ill try to press it down tomorro and also i got smoke coming out but looks like its coming out of the radiator area dont know why?!?! dont see from where but its in that general area
Smoke is prob just oil from your hands touching the exhuast and other stuff thats heating up burning it off. What do you mean by he blew his head? Blew his head gasket?
he blew his head like valves and head gasket but! im not 100% sure if valves are shot cuz i took it machine shop to fix it and he dumped head in that acid thing and cleaned it up but he said valves werent messed up so i guess there fine but then my mechanic says there shot cuz four of them pop out but w/e seems to be working fine now hope it stays like that only problem is that random smoke i was hoping its just like oil or coolant that was spilled burning off and im just waiting to see if it goes away which i hope it does
if the heads off the car how are you keeping both cam gears at tdc? (arrow pointing up) at tdc the cams are putting pressure on the rockers to start opening valves. so to answer this yes at tdc not ALL valves are closed
If this head is like a ls then why would you have the cams installed while the head is off the car. With the cams out of the head all the valves should be tightly closed.
no no i nvr removed the cams from the head i just removed head from block to change the gasket and idk this guy who seems like he knows his **** told me valves r bent cuz not all valves were closed when the head is off the block but guess he was mistaken cuz most people say that it shouldn't be all closed
Ok I am a bit lost on this. I have tore many of ls heads off of a motor and I always have to remove the cams to get to the head bolts. If not the cams are in the way. Are the vtec heads different. Cause they have the same bolt pattern and I am sure the same cam gears. ????
yea i think they are different cuz i rememebr when i took out the head off a prelude i needed to take cams off but this is a SOHC and idk wasnt really necessary in removing the cam
D series the head comes off w/o having to remove the cam
dohc in that case has to remove the cams because the cams sit over the head stud bolts
my friend d16 i thought he has bent valves cause they were alil open but i relized the cam was still in there so we replaced tha head on the block n it runs fine
