the timing marks are on the cam gear. there should just be two marks by the edges of the teeth and they should be lined up with the top of the head. also look at the gear there should be something to tell you which side of the gear should be pointing upward so that you dont set the timing 180 off.

The crankshaft should be at top dead center. There should be a mark on the crank gear and I believe there is a pointer on the block. If you don't see a mark on the crank gear then it is probably on backwords. Slide it off and check. It is best to have the covers on and match the crank pulley mark to the timing cover because some timing belts don't fit quite right and you have to put the crank pulley on backwords to corect the valve timing. You won't be able to tell unless you can verify that the crank is EXACTLY top dead center. If you can't get the covers then you can use a degree wheel and a piston stop to find TDC. Once you find TDC, line up you cam gear to its marks and install the belt. If the marks won't line up, flip the crank gear around. Remember that the shafts will move a tiny bit when you take the slack out of the belt so make sure the crank is still at TDC when you do you final check. To set belt tension turn the crank counter clockwise until CAM gear moves 3 teeth then loosen the tensioner bolt to allow the spring to pull the tensioner into the belt, then tighten the tensioner back up.
