MSD what?

Could MSD unit have a "programmable" rev limiter?

I don't see how better springs would do anything but increase "possible" RPM. 94

if its hitting a limiter, than its in your dist.

If its just floating at 5k, its mechanical.

REV LIMITER
6AL, 6ALN, 6BTM: These ignitions are equipped with built-in Adjustable Soft Touch Rev
Controls. MSD Rev Limiters are adjustable with plug-in modules which are available in 100
rpm increments. The Soft Touch circuitry provides a smooth and accurate rev limit by
dropping the spark to individual cylinders. The Soft Touch produces a load-free rev limit
that is within 1% of the selected rpm. 94

Saying it bogs down at 5k is a bit of a different story than just not revving past 5k. Check your timing. The MSD would have altered your ignition timing characteristics.

Pretty sure that would feel like engine is bogging, have you checked what rev limit is set at on the MSD? 94

It would likely need to be retarded if the ignition timing is the issue but it should be checked with a timing light. You wouldn't want to make it worse.
