what tranny?!?
ok...so i have a b16 j1 right now and i like the gearing in it. but my 4th is beginning to grind and EVERY once in a while my third does too. SO its time for a tranny swap i think. ok now like i said i like the gearing in the j1 that i have but i need a longer 5th gear...i dont know ANYTHING about working on trannys but im pretty tech savvy when it comes to learning new things so id like to try to do my work myself but i can take it to the shop if i have too.
NOW, i need help deciding what to do...my first thought was to get another j1 and put an ls 5th gear in it...however i dont know how easy that is to do and the j1 is kinda hard to find. im also not rolling in money even though i want to do this right. i was looking at gear ratios and i think that other trannys id be ok with would be a y1 or a ys1 with a 5th swap, .742 is way to short. now like i said im a tranny noob so if theres any other similar trannys for cheaper or ones that are better or easier to come by please let me know.
i was also considering rebuilding my b16 but i really cant afford to have my car down for more then a week week and a half so if i rip my tranny out and rebuild it and switch the 5th gear out, myself or a shop would have to be able to get it done quick.
just for reference i have da 93 teggy with a b20b swap and p8r head. im planning on keeping the b20 bottom but once the tranny job is done im swapping the head to a b18c5 and just adding some bolt on's then calling it a day for the daily driver. so if theres another tranny that would be a better match up for that set up please let me know, thanks!
any links are appreciated im a noob here still!!

You'd have to change your clutch if you go to a ys1 transmission but you can get a s1, another j1 or a y1.
This would be a good thing for your j1

or a little cheaper

You'd want to make sure the dogteeth on the gears themselves are good still though.
You can rebuild it and know the transmission will work instead of buying another one and hoping that it doesn't grind
This is a good thread teaching how to do it

yeah, it's not too bad of a process. Just make sure you keep everything in one area and you can even lay out the pieces in the order they came off to make it a little easier.
