Default What do I have to remove in order to replace the steering rack?

I've never done any real intensive work with a car so I'm curious about what is needed in order to replace my power steering rack with a manual one. Do I have to remove the steering wheel or is there a way for me to disconnect the wheel and the rack so that I can put in the non-power assisted rack?

Under the dash there is a plastic cover over the column linkage, between the brake and gas pedals. Remove that, then unbolt the U-joint connection between the column and the rack.

Just make sure the rack is as centered as you can get it and your steering wheel is straight when you connect it back together. I did this, then had the car aligned, and I think I may have had to make another slight adjustment between the wheel and rack to get the wheel to be straight while driving straight.
